A manufacturing part of the town was badly damaged at an estmate of $60,000 to $75,000.The buildings burned were the stables of C. A. Virden & Company, two warehouses on Atkins wharf, three warehouses on Ponders wharf, Virdens lumber yard and sheds, the tomato and pea packing factory of Royal Packing Company, the plant of the Milton Electric Light Company, the Royal Flour and Corn Mill, and a warehouse on Burtons wharf. The dwellings of Captain Atkins and the Douglas White Shirt Factory, caught fire, but were saved after some damage. The Milton Times Building, the Jr. O.U.A.M. hall, the three largest stores and two big carriage factories of S. J. Wilson & Son caught fire several times. The fire finally died out on the Royal Grist Mill. Two years ago the entire business ! section of the town was burned out and despite the efforts of certain citizens, no water plant was built. Today the dependence was on one hand pump and bucket brigades to fight the big fire. The entire town helped the work and long lines of women and children pumped water and passed buckets whle the men fought close to the burning buildings.
