For the third time in two years the business section of Rehoboth Beach was swept by fire this morning and not stopped until it burnt itself out when reaching vacent lots left by another fire on November 22, 1912. The fire started on the second floor of Carmeans garage and rapidly spread to surrounding property. Apparatus was sent from Wilminton, Diver, Harrington, Georgetown, Dover and Lewes. The garage where the fire started is situated on Rehoboth Acvenue, above First street, a closely built section of the town. Flames spread quickly to the Atlantic Hotel, which is owed by John A. Lingo. a large building with a general store on the ground floor, and it was soon consumed. Next to go was the large double store of A. W. Dick at First street and Rehoboth Avenue. Several cottages in the rear of the garage were burned. A stiff southerly wind was blowing and the flames ate their way onto the next block, bringing it to the large cottage residences on Surf Avenue which are mostly owned bt Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington residents. Eight buildings in this block are gone. There is no water system here no means to fight fire adequately. The cause of the fire has not been definitely learned and its quickly apparent the local fire company would not be able to cope with the fire. Frederick A. Ross, the Mayor, asked for companies from other places. Lewes, only seven miles from Rehoboth had the first company arrive. Persons living on the main thoroughfare were much concerned and they bent every energy toward saving the properties and effects. The Carnegi building on the north side of Rehoboth avenue , about a block west of the First street boardwalk, along with all the buildings on that side of the street, were buned. At noon the fire was got under control but left a large block in the center of town destroyed with damage extended beyond this limit. A loss of $100,000 is estimated and Rehoboth being a town of frame houses, had little insurance. Following is a list of the building burned: Carmeans garage, A. W. Dick store, stables and residence, many cottages , Atlantic Hotel, Lingo store, Methodist Episcopal ! Church. Many other cotttages were burned about the roof but men on top with buckets of water kept the flames from spreading across the street. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
