"Capt. TURLEY had fallen into a mistake in his reckoning, frequently, an unavoidable affair, and had imagined he was at least twenty miles to the eastward of his real situation. He 'cast the lead' but the result did not undeceive him for the sounding were about the same as he would have had if where he fancied he was. Still, however, anxious, for the night was dark, and the gale rising from the northeast, he went aloft, and there discovered a light, which still further deceived him, for, predisposed to expect the 'fifteen fathom light' in the direction in which he looked and seeing nothng in the light before him to discountenance this supposition , he was ever more satisfied of his locality and ran straight upon the coast". ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
