When the train rolled into Georgetown the boy was found perched on the back of the last coach astride the rubber pipe of the air brake attachment and with his feet almost dragging on the ties. With the wind whistling around him he was liable at any moment to be swept from the seat. The canners have been tremendously overtaxed and many canners have found it necessary to resort to various ruses to keep the farmer from hauling in the fruit. Farmers who made contracts early in the season at planting time have the advantage over their neighbors who took the chance and planted to the open market. There is no market for uncontracted tomatoes. Article Text: July 3, 1879: A quaint old town is Lewes, with its low roofed houses, clap boarded from peak to foundation, with its narrow, winding streets, along which move carts and chaise that look as if they might have done service in pre-revolutionary times, with its contented appearing citizens sauntering along the shaded sidwalks or engaging in genial talk at the grocery corner. Norless, unlike the rest of the world, is the long sandy beach that stretches away from Lewes toward Cape Henlopen. Along it for a mile or more are scattered scores of wrecks, the crumbling mementoes of staunch craft that once danced gaily over the billows of the sea, and huge anchors lie here and there that have been fished out of the bay and brought ashore by men who thus earn a precarrous livelihood. The Cape too is a strange place, with that huge wave of sand rolling across it at the rate of twelve feet each year, with the tops of tall trees peering like a forest of stumps from its creast. Altogether, Lewes, and th! e neighborhood , are well worthy of a visit by those who would like to see nature untouched and unchanged by modern acts. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! ELLIOT, a well known merchant and his four companions. The shifting sands of the beach had completely covered a little frame house once used for the storage of oil for the Cape Henlopen lighthouse over sixty years ago and it was soon forgotten. Elliot and his companions were strolling on the beach the other day when they found the peak of a house roof jutting from he sand. Procuring shovels they soon had it uncovered and found it to be the forgotten storehouse and forecing open the door came into a veritable refrigerator, from the roof of which hung large icicles. They soon melted in the heat of the warm sun. Elliot says the discovery is considerable for it shows a new method of keeping ice. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
