(AP) Residents of Cape May looked across Delaware Bay to Lewes, Delaware, 13 miles distant, and did a double take Thursday. Lewes appeared upside down. The phenomenon failed to create a panic, however, because the good folk of Cape May recalled that on February 16 their own town appeared topsy turvy to the residents of Lewes. The situation in each case was caused by a mirage. Thursdays lasted fifteen minutes. After that Lewes righted itself to viewers in Cape May. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! We have had two expresses to this place this morning. One left Lewes Town at 4 o'clock yesterday and the other at 10 o'clock last night Both mention the cannonades. We at this place heard the cannon until 6 o'clock this morning. I hope our friends in New Castle County will not let us be subdued for want of ammunition and other supplies. We have two 18 pounders, but no ball. We have two 9 pounders but the ball is too big for the caliber, We had but 15 casks of powder when the attack commenced. The young man that came with the last express tells me that one of the 18 pounders was mounted yesterday which was played on a sloop and silenced her fire. He also says our men behaved well and that the women and children have left the garrison. He also tells me that the Belvidere came within two miles of the town and that her balls did not reach it. The two smaller vessels sent them over the town so that they were obliged to alter so that a few would injure. The opinion of the officers is if we had 24 and 32 pounders that we could beat off the gun boats and smaller vessels. This monent a bill has passed the senate authorising the governor to draw the sum of two thousand dollars for the purpose of defending Lewes Town, &c. This is for the exigency of the moment only. It contains a Presbyterian and Methodist church, and about eighty houses, built chiefly on a street which is more that three miles in length and extending along a creek which separates the town from the pitch of the cape. The situation is high and commands a full prospect of the lighthouse and the sea. The courthouse and the jail are commodious buildings and give an air of importance to the town. MORSE'S Gazetteer: This place has been attacked by the British squadron and a manly defence has been made with but little injury to the place at the latest dates received. The Legislature of Delaware convened in conseuence of its invasion and a temporary appropriation was made of $2000 for defence of Lewistown. They had two 18 pounders and two 9 pounders mounted on the day of the attack and 268 men acted on the defensive. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! This, it now appears was a mistake. The rockets went over the town but did no injury and one of the bombs fell on it, fortunately however, it did nort explode. The damage done is estimated at two thousand dollars, many of the houses being perforated by the balls. The shot from the Belvidera went some distance beyond the place. The cannonading was discountinued on the afternoon of the 7th inst., and the Belvidera put to sea on the 8th, leaving the Poictiers and small vessels in the bay where they still remained on Monday last. It is surprising that, notwithstanding the severe fire of the enemy, no lives were lost on our side nor was a single person wounded. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! It is at the mouth of the Delaware Bay and forms a basin by Cape Henlopen and the Delaware shore. It is at a distance of about fifteen miles from Cape May on the New Jersey shore and about twelve hours distance, by ordinary sailing craft, northwest to Philadelphia through the Delaware Bay and River and about the same to New York by sea. Our governmeent has long since built a Breakwater here, together with an ice breaker and lighthouse. The beach at Lewes has not the same advantages for surf bathing as Cape May or Newport, yet sufficiently so for useful purposes. A landing is is effected on the Delaware beach in a smooth sea but it is difficult getting on and off without a surf boat. A long wooden dock was formerly in existence, built by the Government, but that has rotted away. If a good substantial stone pier was now put up it would not only be a lasting advantage to the farmers of the little State, but would open a valuable communication for fishermen with our Northern ports. The fine grazing lands and beautiful farms, everywhere extending throughout the State of Delaware, warrent the belief that the town of Lewes could be made one of the most valuable in the United States. It is the place of refuge for the heaviest vessels in the severest of storms, and at the hour of this writing there are one large ship, and about thirty schooners riding in safety in a violent northeaster near the Breakwater. Lewes is also a pleasant summer resort for invalid and sportsmen. The nearest railroad is twety-five miles in the town of Milford, which connects with New Castle, Wilmington and Philadelphia. The American Telegraph Company have recently established a line from the coast and it is now in working order. A Fort here, and one or two vessel of war, would be a protection to Delaware Bay and River and would keep in check any Pirates or foregn craft that might attempt to invade our shores.
