HICKMAN, owned by NATHANIEL W. HICKMAN, of Lewes, Delaware was sunk at the mouth of Lewes Creek. She was laden with 4,000 bushels, which is probably an entire loss. The vessel can probably be raised without mich loss, as she is entirely new, but if the corn is lost, the loss cannot fall short of $6000. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The fishermen urgently favor the bill, while merchants, tradesmen, hotel keepers and some others vehemently oppose it. The contending faction keep the town in turmoil. Delegations from both sides were before the legislative committee this afternoon. Their statements were flatly irreconcilable. The fishermen contend that the factories are ruining their business and are a grievious public nuisance. The opponents hold that the factories have not injured the fishermen and that they are a great public benefit, contributing largely to the town revenues and to the generaal prosperity. The committee inclines to favor the fishermen. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com

The attention of Philadelphia merchants has been awakened by the republication in several of the leading commercial papers of that city of an article we gave a few issues since. There is reasonable prospect that the negotiations now being made will succed, and that the few hundred thousand dollars necessary to make an all season communication with the ocean will be subscribed by the Philadelphia capitalist. It were worse than folly to have expended the millions on millions of dollars to being the western trade to their city and there let it stop whan a trifling additional outlaywill perfect the chain of communication between the great west and the ocean, through Philadelphia. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The flames started at 7 o'clock in the cottage of Mrs C.A. KING which was quickly destroyed as Rehoboth has no adequate means for fighting fires. All of Rehoboths hundreds of buildiings are built of wood and of the most inflammable material and the King cottage was soon ashes. The TOWNSEND HOTEL, the BRAYTON HOTEL and the cottage of DR. THOMPSON of Lewes who is mayor of the city by the sea were soon in flames. The bucket brigade fought valiantly but soon realized the hopelessnes of the contest and appealed to Wilmington, Georgetown and Lewes for help. The fire spread from the King cottage to the BALTIMORE HOTEL on Railroad Avenue and from this structure to the large cottage of D. C. TOWNSEND. The fine large cottage belonging to DALLAS MARVEL of Laurel, Del., which stands alongside of Townsend cottage a! lso caught fire and was partially destroyed. A special train with engines and fire fighters was run from Georgetown and Lewes and the call to Wilmington for help was withdrawn. Fortunately, the wind shifted, blowing the flames toward the ocean which probably saved the southern and western parts of the city from destruction. The loss is about $26,000 with insurance of only about $2,500. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Aged Negro's Widow is Astonished at the Claim of Another Woman. Article Text: New Castle, Del., Jan. 23.--The body of Reuben ROY, an aged and highly respected colored citizen, whose death occurred several days ago, was claimed by another wife, in addition to the one to whom he was legally married in this city about twelve years ago. The people of the community were astounded to learn that the man had another wife and a daughter, nearing the age of twenty years. They reside at Kirkwood, about twelve miles distant, but had never been heard of by the widow in this city or by any of the most intimate friends of the deceased. The latter, who was a trustee of the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church, had the confidence and esteem of all the people. He was also an honored member of Levi Anderson Lodge, Colored Masons, of this city. When the stranger came here, with her daughter, they went to the home of the deceased and laid claim to the body, and the legal widow sat and listened to the explanation and then quietly asked that the first Mrs. ROY produce her marriage certificate. This she could not do and the local Mrs. ROY produced her certificate of marriage and informed the stranger that she would herself look after all arrangements and collect the insurance money, which she did, and gave to Reuben a respectable funeral. Both women and the daughter followed the body to the grave, but there was no scene as was anticipated at the Union Cemetery. The visitor remained at the ROY home until morning, when they left for their home. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
