Why and how is this? If neither regiment now forming is full, why cannot the full companies from each form one regiment and be off for the seat of the war. We know the men are anxious to be there and we think there are enough already sworn in to make one regiment. Why not send them on? Let our State be represented in the next great battle. Milford has sent fifty of her citizens and they want to be in the field. M. At the Ellendale station there is an interlocking signal tower because of the intersection of the Queen Annes Railroad near that point. When one train is approaching on the D.M.& V. and has the rightaway the Queen Annes switches are opened by the automatic arrangement so that no train can pass through and telescope another, but will be derailed. This was the situation which confronted Engineer EWING and the passenger of the D. M. & V. train when they approached the Ellendale junction this morning. In the smoking car of the Lewes train were Secretary of State HUGHES, state Senator FRANKLIN C. MAULL, and Dr. HIRAM R. BURTON, who was today elected a delegate to the Republican National Convention. There were a number of others in this forward car and all saw their peril at o! nce, but almost immediately the train left the track and thundered along on the cross ties and stopped twenty feet from the Queen Annes tracks, just as the morning train on that road thundered by. The passengers were badly jolted but not seriously hurt. The fireman, thinking the trsin could not be stopped, jumped, and went over an embankment, breaking his ankle. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: Seaford, Del., Aug. 27.--A race war, threatened here as the result of negroes mortally wounding a county. Constable Curtis STEEN, while attempting to round up a gang of negro "craps" shooters, was shot by two of the negroes. He cannot recover, physicians say. STEEN was appointed constable recently by Sussex County Court, and this was his first attempt at making an arrest. A gang of seven negroes started a dice game near the Standard Oil Company's tanks. Several of the negroes who live in the grove went to Constable STEEN's home, and informed him of the game. The constable went to the tanks, but before he could arrest the men, two negroes, Henry PETITT and Arch MILLS, drew their revolvers and shot the constable. After shooting him, they jumped on him, stamped him and beat him unmercifully with steel knuckles. One bullet entered STEEN's lung, while two others pierced his thigh. The negroes made their escape down the Cambridge & Seaford Railroad toward the Maryland line. The news of the shooting soon spread over the town, and a posse of 200 armed men were soon on their trail. Chief of Police MARTIN and others routed one of the negroes from a clump of trees. Chief MARTIN fired his double-barreled gun at the fleeing negro but he missed him and the negro escaped. State Detectives HAWKINS and GILLS joined in the hunt. The citizens have threatened to burn out the negro colony, and scores of them are leaving town. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The necessary excavation is only about 50 yards. In response to an appeal of a citizens committee , headed by Georg H. Article Text: General John Dagworthy in whose memory a monument was dedicated Saturday at Dagsboro, Delaware, was at one time a resident of Trenton, his home being a house where the Mechanics National Bank now stands. Papers in the possession of Judge William S. Yard, show that the estate was a large one and that in 1740, Lewis Morris, first governor of the state after the separation from New York, rented the Dagworthy house for use as the execuative mansion. At that time the Legislature met alternately in Perth Amboy and Burlington. Later the Dagworthy residence became Trenton's leading hotel and General Washington was entertained in it. General Dagworthy was for several years sheriff of Hunterdon county which included the territory now in Mercer county. He married Martha, the dsughter of John Cadwalader, whose estate included the site of Cadwalader Park. One of Dagworthy's daughters married a Dickinson of the family of that name yet prominent in this city. James Yard, oldest son of W! illiam Yard, one of the early settlers here, married Annie, one of General Dagworthy's daughters. General Dagworthy saw service in the Continental Army and took a part in saving the remnants of the Bradford Expedition. Serving with distinction during the War of Independance, he survived, and settled on what was known as "Dagworthy Conquest" in what he thought was Maryland but which was really in the bounds of Delaware. There he founded the town of Dagsboro. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com
