Article Text: Lewes, Del., Jan 8, 1913: Just found after a disappearance of over a half century, an old cannon which had been used for many years of celebrations in Lewes was brought to light yesterday and last night the whole town awoke with its roar until the enthusiam of the young men of the town and the supply of powder gave out. For years the old cannon was used for political celebrations, but when Abraham Lincoln was nominated for the Presidency the Republicans went to get the cannon for their celebration only to find the Whigs and Democrats had combined to hide it and it had disappeared from its accustomed place. A search was made for several months, the creek was prodded, all to no avail. The search was given up and forgotten except for a few old men of town. A short time ago, one of these men, on his death bed, revealed its location and told the story of him being one of the men who helped hide it. Yesterday, a crowd of young men went to the place described and found the cannon buried in a field. It was brought to town last night and the first notice of its recovery was heard when its roar sounded over the town. It now has been placed in a central part of the town and mounted on a new carriage. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: Lewes, Del., Dec 3, 1912: The body of HENRY RODNEY, a wealthy man killed in Paris in falling from a train, was brought to Lewes today for burial. Rodney was a native of Lewes. The remains reached New York on the steamer Savoie on Sunday, from Havre. Rodney, while in the first class compartment of a railway car near Paris, France, he leaned on the unfastened door which opened and he was pitched to the platform of a station. His body was interred in Paris until relatives in this county could be notified. Interment was made in St Peter's Episcopal Churchyard, Lewes, today in accordance with his wish. While the grave was being dug in a congested part of the cemetery yesterday, the resting place of Captain James Drew was unearthed. It was directly over the chancel foundation of the very first ancient St. Peters church. Drew was drowned in 1798 off Cape Henlopen when his ship, The DeBrack, was lost with a fortune in treasures. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The rumor is based on the fact that W. WATSON HARRINGTON, a well known lawyer of Kent County has been getting options on some of the land there and that it is for the purpose of constructing a fort. The place is almost opposite Cape May and would make a second check on a foreign fleet in case that a fortification of some kind should be constructed at Lewes as was contemplated some time ago. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Major L. E. Lyon of the United States Engineers Office, yesterday, told the committee that the abandonment of the pier had been recommended because the use of the pier commercially would not justify the large cost of maintenance required. It would cost the government about #258,000 to put the pier into proper shape for use and in addition a considerable sum would have to be expended in dredging to depths alongside sufficient to allow ordinary sea going vessels to make use of the pier. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! On the 29th ult, it says, the blue fish were again chasing and devouriing the manhaden shad, "moss bunkers", as they are sometimes called, and thousands, in their efforts to escape the ravages of the blue fish ran high and dry on the beach. Near the little light house on the cape, where the high tides overflow into the valley, several thousands bushels sought refuge but were even followed over the flats by their formidable enemies and many of the latter were caught on the flat sands, where the water was only a few inches deep. After this fell off, these fish were left to die and many were being hauled off into the country by the farmers who use them as fertilizer. It is somewhat singular, remarks the 'Light', that these fish should make their appearance here in the manner stated, just at this season this year and last. Nothing like it was ever s! een or heard of before along the coast. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The weapon and wound were well calculated to produce immediate death, which was the result. The wound was inflicted under the nipple of the left breast and must have reached the heart. The boat of the brig had been put ashore at this house with the pilot, MR. WAY, very sick, and having returned to her the men were ordered to hoist it up when two of them went below, disobedient to orders. The Captain is said to have followed and proceeded to some personal enforcement of his command when the fatal deed was done. THe mate, with some assistance from a neighboring brig, went ashore to Lewes, appealed to the civil authorities and constable HICKMAN, with several armed citizens came to this station for further aid and 6 of the boatmen volunteered to row off whale boat #1. Captain McKIBBIN also volunteered the command of the party, accompanied by Messrs. BYUNT, DENNIS and HUDDY, inspectors at this station. No resistance was made and the three men are now in custody at Lewes. The body was brought ashore where an inquest will be held. MORRIS, having been questioned as to the cause of this unhappy afair, answered emphatically, RUM!. His manner is hardened as if undisturbed by this event. These particularsare such as I have been able to collect and considered by several person with whom I have conversed to be correct. The brig is in charge of Mr. HUDDY, with several of our boatmen and is at anchor near the Ice Breaker. At the usual hour the court adjourned for dinner shortly after which a heavy rain commenced, accompanied with thunder and lightning. A great number of people were attending upon business before the court and the suddenness with which the gust came on impelled every one to fly for shelter, and most of the persons not inhabitants of the town went into the court house and occupied the court room above. In a few minutes after, the summit of the Belfrey was struck with lightning which ran down its roof, thence was attracted by the iron of a window shutter belonging to the Balfrey, frmom thence it decended to the roof of the house and was led down a rafter fited with nails till it got within a foot of the eaves where it passed through the roof and took to one of the studs in the front of the house. As the main body decended the stud two other streams flew off to the iron hoops and hinges! of window shutters, then passed to the lower story to the iron in the door and windows, then so passed off to the earth. Unfortunately, it happened many people were sitting in the upper room against the front wall on a bench extending the whole length of the house. DR. WOLFE, of Lewes, who had brought a poor widow to Georgetown on business in the Orphans Court, was sitting directly in the course of the main stream, and was killed instantly. Two others, one on each side of him, were severely burned. Their watch cases were partly melted. Four more persons suffered greatly by the shock and several others, both above and below stairs were stunned and thrown to the floor. The roof, studs, rafters, windows, shutters and the whole broad side of the house were torn and shivered to pieces. Dr. Wolfe has left a widow and two small children. All the other sufferers are in a fair way of recovery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Remonstrances had been filed against EDWARD T VEASEY, the Virden House and JEFFERON L.
