Article Text: Lewes, Del., Dec.12 1911: Grangers from all over Delaware came here today to attend the three day annual convention of the State Grange which opened today. S. HARRINGTON MESSICK, of Bridgeville, is presiding during the sessions in the Auditorium. Memebrs of the United States Grange are expected here to take part in support of the progressive end of the National Grange. It is understood that Delaware Grange is favorable to the movement. A separate college for women at Newark in connection with the State school for men is a movement that has gained great ground among the grangers during the past year and action of some sort will be taken. There is now no school for women in the State and girls from Delaware are compelled to go to Pennsylvania and Maryland in the absence of even a Normal School. The initative and referendum, the parcels post, the reciprocity treaty with Canada and the shipment of liquorinto dry territory are subjects that will receive action. The principal speakers will be Governors PENNEWILL, of Delaware and CROUTHERS, of Maryland, and DR. WILEY, the pure food advocate of Washington, D. C. During the sessions the sixth degree will be conferred by a picked degree team. The sessions will be concluded Thursday evening with a banquet at which all fourth degree members are invited. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Because of the circumstances it is almost impossible to get the facts for a legal prosecution and it very possible the man will never be arrested. For some time it has been known by the grapevine that whiskey could be purchased on Lewes Beach. although several searches have been made and several warrents issued the men involved have each time got away and houses searched have yielded no clues. Last week, according to information haltingly revealed by the victims, whiskey was sold for $5 a quart and the news went out in all directions. Automobile from all sections slipped down to the beach in the night and some bought as much as a dozen quarts, all guaranteed good whiskey. Many never even tasted the stuff they bought but those who did found it to be good liquor. Upon reaching their homes, after it is claimed that over five hundred bottles were so! ld, it was found that there was only about two inches of real whiskey in the bottles, a false bottom of hardened pariffine was holding back the rest of the contents, which was water. No complaints were made and none are likely to be made but the news is out that many were buncoed. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The light itself is a white vapor light, flashing at intervals of twelve seconds, with a red sector showing to the southeastward, giving warning of the Hen and Chickens shoals. Instead of burning oil, this lamp burns a mixture of oil vapor and air, which gives a very brilliant light. It is the only light of its kind in the district and is expected to make a good showing. The fog horn and submarine bell have not yet been placed in position, but the house itself and light are now complete. The light was erected at a cost of %50,000 and will fill a much needed place in its warning to sailors. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: Lewes, Del., Aug 28, 1911: The Mayor and Common Council pushed the authority of their office to the limit when a MR. MURDEN, who owns a houseboat which lies on Lewes Beach, refused to clear the beach. Council, by order had it pushed off the beach into the Delaware Bay, where it sank in several feet of water. Mr & Mrs Murden, who were on board the houseboat when the order was carried in effect had to be taken off in a naphtha launch. In June of 1910, Murden was given permission by council to draw his houseboat on the beach for two weeks in order to paint it. Following the loss of their boat, Mr & Mrs Murden spent most of the night under the transportation pier, surrounded by sympathetic people who were attracted to the beach by the unusual proceedings. Later, the houseboat was raised and towed to the life saving station. Counsel has been retained to bring suit against the town, Murden claiming that as Town Council accepted his corporation tax payments he was entitled to remain on the beach. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
