Article Text: Milton, Del., Feb 25, 1909: After it was discovered that the family graveyard of D. H. Conwell had been completely torn up and tombstones stolen near Broadkill Beach , it was found yesterday that the graveyard of Alonzo Pepper had also been disturbed and several stones taken from there. Some of the graves had been dug into and about fifteen tombstones removed. The vandals had plainly done their ghoulish work at night and the prints of wagon wheels showed that they had taken the stones away. None of the bodies had been taken out, but many had been disturbed. It is supposed that the stones will be planed and sold again. A woman living on Milford Road remembers hearing heavy wagons passing her house one night some time ago and several men singing drunken songs. She saw a wagon drawn by three horses, containing large white objects that looked like the missing stones. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Especially, the lower end of the beach, known as Dewey Beach, suffered. There twenty-five of twenty-eight cottages have been washed away. At Rehoboth Beach the life saving station and the Baltimore YMCA Summer House are gone. Houses on the northern end of the beach are still standng but the fine front yards and cement sidewalks are washed away. The crew of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse have removed their things and expect to see the old lighthouse swept out to sea during the 10 o'clock high tide tonight. It is impossible to ascertain the real damage at Rehoboth Beach, as at every tide a few more cottages are gone. In fulfillment of her expresed wish, her body had been taken to Philadelphia and there cremated. The ashes were brought back to Rehoboth Beach and scattered to the winds in front of her cottage on the shore. Countess von Oberkamp was born 71 years ago in Germany and lived in various parts of the United States. She always insisted the she was a member of the royal family of Prussia and spoke familiarly of her royal relatives.
