Page 3 AUTHORITIES PUZZLED BY RECLUSE'S DEATH Wounds Indicate Man Found in Ruins of Home Had Been Beaten Elkton, Md., Feb. 4. - Authorities here have been unable to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of Richard LEACH; a recluse, whose charred body was found in his home at Grubbs Landing Saturday. The house occupied by LEACH was destroyed by fire. Physicians who made an examination of the body announced that he had been beaten over the head with a blunt instrument. LEACH moved to the house at Grubbs Landing Saturday from Arden, Del., where he was a member of the single-tax colony. He paid $1,100 cash for the house and took out a mortgage of $l,100 in one of the local banks. Police said it is believed that he had about $100 in cash when he moved his furniture to his new home. Bottles around the property led the authorities to believe that he might have died as a result of a brawl. Another theory is that he might have been struck on the head by a piece of falling timber from the burning house after being: overcome by smoke. His body when found was lying near the door. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com
