Charges against several policemen of the Fourth precinct may result from an investigation being conducted by Inspector Henry L. PRATT, assistant superintendent of police, into statements that the police prevented the cutting of the moorings of the steamer Midland, so that she could be hauled into midstream out of danger, when fire recently destroyed a pier and spread to the vessel, destroying the superstructure. His investigation, Inspector PRATT said yesterday, will not be completed for several days and until he reports to Major Daniel SULLIVAN, superintendent of police, he declined to discuss the matter. Conflicting statements have been made and completion of the investigation is deferred awaiting the testimony of William JACK, a watchman on the Midland, who discovered the fire, and who has been since confined to his home because of burns, and that of another employe of the Norfolk and Washington Steamboat Company, owners of the vessel and pier. Major SULLIVAN declared yesterday that the police boat had saved the steamer Charles Macalester by turning it to midstream. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
