Hager, secretary of the Chicago Historical Society, died yesterday (July 28) from the effects of an overdose of morphine, taken on Saturday, July 28, to relieve a violent headache. He was 71 years of age. New York, July 30: Dr. Winslow S. Pierce died at his residence in Brooklyn yesterday morning, aged 69 years. He had been ill only about 10 days. He had been a resident of New York City for the past 10 years, having moved to Brooklyn only 3 months ago. Dr. Pierce was twice the brother-in-law of late Vice President Hendricks, and was the life-long friend of Stephen A. Douglas, Samuel J. Tilden, and other prominent Democrats. He was a cousin of President Franklin Pierce and related on his mother's side to the Prescotts and Bancrofts. He went to California in 1849 and took a prominent part in the political and material development of that State. Returning to Indiana in 1855 he married a sister of Mr. Hendricks. Some years after her death he married the other sister. The latter died a few months ago. Dr. Pierce continued to reside in Indiana, where he took a large part in developing the resources of the State, until 1876.
