Special to The Washington Post. Rockville, Md., April 4. - Ralph Turner BOWLING, 18-year-old Washington youth, who has been on trial here for the murder of Mrs. Elizabeth BECKWITH, 68 years old, in her home near Colesville, December 20 last, was found guilty of murder in the second degree this afternoon. He was sentenced by Judge PETER to twelve years in the penitentiary. The jury was out two hours and ten minutes. On the first ballot, three jurors favored a verdict of first-degree murder without capital punishment, eight second-degree murder and one acquittal. Farmers and other residents of the Colesville neighborhood ????? in the trial that they did not consider BOWLING insane. The jurors are said to have decided that the killing was not sufficiently premeditated to justify a verdict of murder in the first degree. A motion for a new trial, which was argued briefly by Charles W. PRETTYMAN, Edward F. COLLADAY and Galen L. TA??, counsel for the defense, was overruled by Judges PETER and WORTHINGTON, who presided throughout the trial. In overriding the motion Judge PETER expressed the opinion that the boy should be in the penitentiary, where he would be given needed medical attention, which would be better for him, his family and every one concerned. BOWLING seemed unconcerned when the jury gave its verdict, and smiled broadly two or three times. His father and mother ... much affected, as did other relatives of the boy. BOWLING will be taken to the penitentiary by Sheriff William L. AUD in a few days. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
