Special to The Washington Post. Rockville, Md., April 4. - Ralph Turner BOWLING, 18-year-old Washington youth, who has been on trial here for the murder of Mrs. Elizabeth BECKWITH, 68 years old, in her home near Colesville, December 20 last, was found guilty of murder in the second degree this afternoon. He was sentenced by Judge PETER to twelve years in the penitentiary. The jury was out two hours and ten minutes. On the first ballot, three jurors favored a verdict of first-degree murder without capital punishment, eight second-degree murder and one acquittal. Farmers and other residents of the Colesville neighborhood ????? in the trial that they did not consider BOWLING insane. The jurors are said to have decided that the killing was not sufficiently premeditated to justify a verdict of murder in the first degree. A motion for a new trial, which was argued briefly by Charles W. PRETTYMAN, Edward F. COLLADAY and Galen L. TA??, counsel for the defense, was overruled by Judges PETER and WORTHINGTON, who presided throughout the trial. In overriding the motion Judge PETER expressed the opinion that the boy should be in the penitentiary, where he would be given needed medical attention, which would be better for him, his family and every one concerned. BOWLING seemed unconcerned when the jury gave its verdict, and smiled broadly two or three times. His father and mother ... much affected, as did other relatives of the boy. BOWLING will be taken to the penitentiary by Sheriff William L. AUD in a few days. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Baltimore, Md., April 4. - As a testimonial of the supreme gallantry that cost her soldier-husband his life, Mrs. Hythron Johnston COSTIN, the young widow of Private Henry Gilbert COSTIN, was presented the congressional medal of honor by Maj. Gen. Beaumont Bonaparte BUCK in the blue room of the Belvedere Hotel today. Gen. BUCK eulogized the hero for his bravery in wiping out an enemy machine gun nest in the Argonne advance October 8, 1918, and his notable courage in continuing the attack after he had been wounded, firing at the enemy until he succumbed. As Gen. BUCK presented the medal to Mrs. COSTIN he read Gen. PERSHING's citation of the soldier's bravery and in concluding said: "May this be a solace to you in your bereavement and a cherished token in memory of your brave husband." Among those present, all of whom warmly shook the hand of the hero's widow, were Miss Agnes B. WILSON, daughter of Secretary of Labor WILSON; Gov. HARRINGTON, Maj. Henry A. BARRET, of the 115th infantry, with which Private COSTIN fought, and others, including Gen. BUCK's staff. After the presentation Gov. HARRINGTON paid a glowing tribute to COSTIN as one of the bravest Maryland boys in the war, and promised that the story of COSTIN and his heroism would be recorded in the archives of Maryland. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
