It was then thought that it would end in no good. Last evening, about 7 o'clock, Mr. E. H. (E.R.?) Fuller was shot, when about to enter the National Hotel, by J. W. Schaumberg, formerly an officer in the United States service. We shall give no account of various rumors that were afloat immediately after the occurrence, as much that has been said may have been true, but hard to prove. Mr. Fuller was shot in the side, and the wound is pronounced to be very dangerous by the physicians, who were soon in attendance at the Waverley House, into which the wounded gentleman had been taken. Schaumberg was arrested by officer Davis, and taken before Justice Morsell; who, after hearing the arguments of his counsel, Hon. John P. Hale, refused bail and committed him for a further examination. A large crowd soon collected about the National Hotel after the occurrence and great excitement p! revailed. Propositions were made to carry lynch law into effect, and it was evident that the crowd was disposed to act as executioner; but the arrival of the police put an end to the hot speeches, and quieted the excitement sufficiently to enable them to convey the prisoner to the office without serious trouble. This question was frequently asked last night – "Is this act another argument in favor of abolishing capital punishment?" It was answered; but as the answer was of a kind likely to generate anger in the breasts of some of our prominent citizens, we withhold it. Mr. Fuller was quiet and comparatively easy at ten minutes of 2 o'clock, P. M.; still there is very little ground of hope for his recovery. He remains at Desaules Waverley House, where every attention is paid him. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
