Richmond, Va., Feb. 4. - A defense motion to set aside the verdict in the case of Joseph ENOCH, 23, convicted of first degree murder of Miss Celia SHEVICK in April, last, was denied today by Judge D. C. RICHARDSON in hustings court. Sentence of twenty years' imprisonment recommended by the jury was formally pronounced. An appeal for a writ of error was noted by ENOCH's attorneys and they were allowed sixty days in which to file the petition. Two novel points of law were raised in the case, namely, the admissibility of evidence before the jury as to an alleged confession by the accused, after the court had ruled that the confession was not voluntary, and the admissibility of questions relating to the alleged confession by the commonwealth's attorney and the answers thereto by the defendant in the presence of the jury. Judge RICHARDSON added to his opinion a note specifically asking that the supreme court of appeals pass on these points. Miss SHEVICK was waylaid and attacked while on her way home from a motion picture show here on April 26, last. Her unconscious form was found next morning on a lot near her home by passersby. Her skull had been crushed with a heavy tool and she died that afternoon without regaining consciousness. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Charges against several policemen of the Fourth precinct may result from an investigation being conducted by Inspector Henry L. PRATT, assistant superintendent of police, into statements that the police prevented the cutting of the moorings of the steamer Midland, so that she could be hauled into midstream out of danger, when fire recently destroyed a pier and spread to the vessel, destroying the superstructure. His investigation, Inspector PRATT said yesterday, will not be completed for several days and until he reports to Major Daniel SULLIVAN, superintendent of police, he declined to discuss the matter. Conflicting statements have been made and completion of the investigation is deferred awaiting the testimony of William JACK, a watchman on the Midland, who discovered the fire, and who has been since confined to his home because of burns, and that of another employe of the Norfolk and Washington Steamboat Company, owners of the vessel and pier. Major SULLIVAN declared yesterday that the police boat had saved the steamer Charles Macalester by turning it to midstream. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Page 3 AUTHORITIES PUZZLED BY RECLUSE'S DEATH Wounds Indicate Man Found in Ruins of Home Had Been Beaten Elkton, Md., Feb. 4. - Authorities here have been unable to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of Richard LEACH; a recluse, whose charred body was found in his home at Grubbs Landing Saturday. The house occupied by LEACH was destroyed by fire. Physicians who made an examination of the body announced that he had been beaten over the head with a blunt instrument. LEACH moved to the house at Grubbs Landing Saturday from Arden, Del., where he was a member of the single-tax colony. He paid $1,100 cash for the house and took out a mortgage of $l,100 in one of the local banks. Police said it is believed that he had about $100 in cash when he moved his furniture to his new home. Bottles around the property led the authorities to believe that he might have died as a result of a brawl. Another theory is that he might have been struck on the head by a piece of falling timber from the burning house after being: overcome by smoke. His body when found was lying near the door. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com

The facts are stated precisely as we have received them, and the account is corroborated by another letter, received by another gentleman of this town, on this subject. The Reverend John Watson (who had presided over the Academy at Canonsburg in Washington County) and the Reverend John Moorhead, were married, by the Reverend Mr. Marquis, to two daughters of the Reverend John McMillin on the same day. Each of these gentlemen had a child born to him on the same day. They both labored for a considerable time under a consumptive complaint, both died on the same day, viz. December 1st, 1802, were both interred on the same day and in the same grave. And the same minister who had married them delivered a very affecting sermon on the occasion. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
