E. Church last night was the scene of a brilliant gathering, assembled to witness the nuptials of Capt. Edward E. Holman, of Holly Springs, Miss., and Miss Marian A. Bowen, sister of Mr. J. E. M. Bowen, examiner of trade marks in the Patent Office. Miss Bowen, a very beautiful blonde, was attired in an elegant princesse dress en traine, of white satin, and wore the traditional orange blossoms in her flaxen tresses. The groom, who is a singularly handsome gentleman, dark hair and eyes, was attired in the customary bridal suit. As they entered the church, Mastor Willie Cohen played in fine style Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March.” Rev. Dr. Lanahan performed the wedding ceremony. Many distinguished persons in Washington society, friends of the happy couple, were present. After a reception at the house of the bride’s mother, Mr. and Mrs. Holman took the 9 o’clock train for an extended trip northward. Before their return to Washington, they will pas! s through Holly Springs, were the groom’s family reside. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! It seems that SHERLOCK tried to get credit for a drink from DONNELLY, who refused, and was abused therefor by SHERLOCK, who went out threatening to bring a crowd and whip DONNELLY. Mrs. DONNELLY got SHERLOCK out and tried to keep the two men apart. On his attempting to re-enter she received a severe kick in the abdomen from SHERLOCK. This made her scream, and DONNELLY merged from his place armed with an iron bar, and accompanied by FITZGERALD, they chased SHERLOCK and his crowd to B Street where, on coming up, DONNELLY felled him to the ground by a blow on the head with the ironbar. Sergeant GUY and Officer DUVALL arrested DONNELLY and his friend, and SHERLOCK was cared for by his friends and his w! ound dressed, the injury not being considered serious. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The family re-union at this “golden wedding” last night at Mr. Hunt’s residence, 210 A Street, NE, was a most interesting affair, bringing under the same roof seven children and 13 grandchildren. Two of the children, sons, live the one in Albany, NY, and the other in Lafayette, Ind., the remainder of the children dwelling in Washington. Mr. Hunt was born in 1803, and is consequently in his 76th year. He belongs to a family noted for longevity and vigor, and moves around with an agility more properly appertaining to a man 40 years old than to one who has passed his three score and ten.” His father and two uncles celebrated their golden weddings, one of the uncles with his wife over two years ago commemorating the 64th anniversary of their married life. Mrs. Hunt, who is equally as active as her husband, was born in 1806 and is now in her 73rd year. The parlors ! were profusely and elegantly decorated with flowers, one pyramidal bouquet, a present, being a novelty of floral skill and taste. Mr. and Mrs. Hunt were the recipients of many handsome presents from their old friends in Washington, they having lived here since 1849 (1840??). An elegant banquet was spread in the dining room to which full justice was done. The occasion was one of much interest. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com

On coming out of the dressing room, Mr. Thorn stood up on the rail at the eastern end of the building, which he had never visited before, and dived overboard. Unfortunately at this end of the tank the water is only about 3 feet deep, the bottom being of hard cement. Prof. ODLUM, who saw the contemplated jump, called to THORN, but too late to stop him. The latter came to the surface in an insensible condition, having struck his head with such force as to suffer concussion of the brain. H was immediately rescued by the attendants, and medical aid summoned. Four physicians responded, and restoratives were applied to the gentleman, who soon recovered sufficiently to be taken to his home on E street. His condition last night was as comfortable as could be expected. Here can be no blam! e whatever attached to the management of the Natatorium, for every precaution has been taken to prevent an accident of this kind. The shallow water, which is only used by the smaller boys in learning to swim, is roped off, and the spring board, trapeze, etc., are at the western end. There were at least 100 people in the building at the time, and had Mr. THORN thought but one moment before taking his leap, he would have been spared the accident. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Osborn nee Goodrick against Charles Osborne. The parties were married in Christ Church by Rev. Mr. Olds, and the grounds for the divorce granted June 18, 1873, were the defendant’s cruelty and desertion. It now appears that Osborne when he left here went to Sioux City, Iowa, where he married again in September 1872. After he had deserted this wife last fall, she heard something of a Washington marriage and subsequent divorce, and now has positive information on the subject, and the consolation of knowing that she is not legally bound to Osborne, his marriage to her having been bigamous. Georgetown Gossip: - Gus Dyson, arrested by Officer Green last Saturday for attempted outrage, was sent to the grand jury under $5,000 bonds. - Miss M. T. Earle and Mrs. Archer leave this morning for Atlantic City. - About half past 10 o’clock Monday night, Mr. J. R. Dixon, of the canal boat “Albert Zeigler,” residing at Point of Rocks, MD, was assaulted by two colored men about 100 yards above the Aqueduct bridge, on the canal road. He was knocked down, and his pocket-book containing $15 taken from him. He could give no description of the thieves, they making good their escape before he came to his senses. Bleeding From His Lungs: While Mr. Frank W. The wisdom, or indeed expediency of parties interested taking pains to keep such matters private, is merely a question of taste, in view of the frequent speedy marriages of the divorced couples. The privacy thus obtained is only temporary, as just as soon as the transaction is made one of record, reporters have full access to the facts. More than ordinary pains have been taken in the case of Robert W. C. Mitchell, private secretary to Carl Schurz. The early stages of his suit for divorce from his wife, Laura E. Mitchell, instituted August 11, 1877, have been pretty well ventilated. The wife’s cross bill and answer, filed August 16, were also given due publicity. The allegations of these previous documents were only exceeded in dreadful humiliations by the testimony subsequen! tly taken in the case in Chicago, this city, and elsewhere. As indicated by the cross bill, answer, reflection, etc., the contest was a very bitter one. Indeed, it was freely said at the time that on the result depended Mitchell’s retaining his place with Schurz. On May 24th, the bill and cross bill were quietly dismissed by consent of the counsel on both sides, and a new suit entered by his wife. This last move was made and the subsequent steps carried on in a carefully planned manner, so as to avoid all publicity. No opposition being made on the part of the husband, the decree was granted. The custody of the youngest child, Walter, is given to the wife and the two elder ones, Aureille J. and Robert C., to the father. This, though perhaps of most general interest, is not the only decree which has been recently gotten through without appearing on the proceedings of the court. Catherine Hands entered suit for divorce from Adam C. Hands, on January 16. The parties ! were married November 10, 1872, and had one child. The causes alleged in this case were drunkenness, non-support, and adultery. The decree gives the wife the custody of her child. The suit of Catherine E. Ward against George E. Ward has also recently been privately completed by a decree of divorce. The pair were married by the Rev. Mr. Benson, at Alexandria, January 17, 1862. Drunkenness and bad conduct generally were the causes alleged. Next comes the case of James F. Linden, who sued for divorce from his wife, Mary A. Linden, nee Eldridge. The cause set forth in the petition and sustained in the testimony was an inability on the part of the wife to fill the marriage relation. They were married by Rev. Dr. Gray in October 1874. Isaac Alexander married his late wife, who had like himself been previously married, in St. Patrick’s church, in this city, on September 19, 1876, the Rev. J. A. Walter officiating at the ceremony. On April 25, he entered suit for divorce, claiming that consummation of the marriage rite was impossible. The! decree of divorce was granted secretly, like the rest. Mr. Alexander has since remarried. Harry J. McMurray and Hattie R. Evans were married in November 1874, by Rev. B. Peyton Brown. On march 8, the wife entered suit for divorce, alleging cruelty, threats, desertion and non-support. The decree was granted, giving her the custody of their only child, a girl. The romantic marriage of Miss Mary Herbert with Manuel A. Mendez in October 1872 was also recently declared null and void by one of Justice MacArthur’s private decrees. The bill, which was filed April 1, declares that the marriage took place at the Y. M. C. A. rooms, and was against her will or consent. Rev. G. A. Hall, the then secretary of the association, celebrated the rites for the parties. The manner of the marriage and the desertion of Mendez in December 1872 were the causes for the divorce. A petition has been filed by Lester W. Burton for divorce from Nellie L. Burton. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DC-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
