She was the daughter of James Buchanan BROWN and Emma Jane CRAWFORD. 1900 Clara appeared in this census as “Pearl” BROWN, daughter of James B. BROWN. See “BROWN, James Buchanan: 1856 - 1946), p. (?). 1905 About 1905, Clara married David J. DAVIES, parentage unknown. These are their children: Clara Emma, born 3 July 1906; married George GUTHRIE in 1939. Clara died 27 May 1987 in Pontiac, Michigan. Marion Marie, born 21 February 1908; married Earl D. MILLER; died in Greensburg, Pennsylvania in 1956. 1910 Clara appeared in the 1910 census living on Rutherford Avenue, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania, as “Perle”, wife of David J. DAVIES. She was 24, had been married 5 years, and was the mother of 2 children, both living at the time the census was taken. She and her parents were born in Pennsylvania, and she could speak English, read and write. She had no occupation. Clara’s husband, David, was 34, married 5 years. He and his parents were born in Wales and spoke Welsh. David’s occupation was sports “auditor” (editor), paper office. He could speak English, read and write. Clara’s two daughters were also in the home: Clara, 4, and Marion, 2, both born in Pennsylvania. Included in the household was Mary BROWN, 14, sister-in-law. She and her parents were born in Pennsylvania, she could speak English, read and write. 1918 Clara died 1 December 1918 in the Southside Hospital, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. According to her death certificate, Clara was a married white female, born 21 November 1885 in Pittsburgh. Age at death was 33 years, 9 months. Her occupation was Housework. Her father was James Brown, birthplace US. Her mother’s maiden name was Emma Crawford, birthplace US. Informant was Mr. James Brown, 1318 Alton Ave. Clara was attended by A. S. Taylor, MD from 20 November 1918 to 1 December 1918. He last saw her alive on 1 December 1918. Cause of death was bronchial pneumonia, contributory cause, influenza. Dr. Taylor signed the death certificate 1 December 1918 at South Side Hospital. Place of burial was Homewood Cemetery, 4 December 1918. Undertaker was William Slater & Sons, Virginia Ave., Pittsburgh. Obituary, Pittsburgh Press, 2 Dec. 1918: "MRS. DAVID J. DAVIES. Mrs. Clara Pearl Davies, aged 33, 805 Bayonne ave., Beechview, wife of David J. Davies, formerly sporting editor of the Dispatch, died yesterday in the Southside hospital. She was daughter of James B. And Emma Brown of 1318 Alton ave., Beechview. She was born in Allegheny, now the Northside, and had resided all of her life in Pittsburgh. She was educated in the public school in the old First ward of Allegheny. She was married to Mr. Davies 13 years ago, and had lived for the last six years in Beechview. She was an active worker in the Beechview Red Cross auxiliary and was a member of the Beechview Presbyterian church and the Ladies’ Aid society. Her husband is doing special duty for the U. S. Marine corps in San Domingo. Besides her husband and parents, two daughters, Clara and Marion Davies, both at home; two brothers, Harry Brown of the Northside, and Edgar Brown, with Fifteenth U. S. Engineers in France, and one sister, Mrs. William Charles,! Jr., Rockland ave., Northside, survive.” Obituary, Pittsburgh Gazette, 3 December 1918: “DAVIES– On Sunday, December 1, 1918 at 12 o’clock noon, at the South Side Hospital, Mrs CLARA PEARL DAVIES (nee Brown), wife of David J. Davies, formerly sporting editor of Pittsurgh Dispatch, in her 33rd year. Funeral services at 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the residence of her parents, Mr. And Mrs. J. B. Brown, 1318 Alton avenue, Beechview. Interment private Wednesday 1:30 p.m.” 1920 Clara’s daughters were not located in this census. 1930 This census found Clara’s daughter, Marion M. DAVIES, in her father’s household in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. She was 22, single, able to speak English, read and write. Marion and her parents were born in Pennsylvania. She worked as a secretary for ..... (not legible) press. Marion’s father, David J. DAVIES, was 47, head of household, first married at 23, born in Pennsylvania. His parents were born in Wales. David could speak English, read and write, and worked as a magazine editor. He was a veteran of WW I, and rented his home for $75 per month. There was a radio in the home. David’s second wife, first name not legible, was 29, first married at 19. She was able to speak English, read and write. She was born in Pennsylvania, her parents in Germany, and she was not employed. Child in the home: David D., Jr., son, 1 year 10 months, born in Pennsylvania. Clara Emma, 27, was found living in the household of her husband, George L. GUTHRIE, at 630 Magnolia Avenue North, Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan. "
