Dear Members, Eleanor Josephine Trehawke Davies, was the first woman to cross the English Channel in a powered aeroplane, although as a passenger, not a pilot. She was the first woman in the world to loop-the-loop in an aeroplane, but again as a passenger. She was never an aviatrix. Both of the flights mentioned, as with many others, were made with Gustav Hamel as the pilot. Miss Davies flew with many of the leading aviators of the pre. WW1 period. She was born in the St. Pancras area of London in 1880. I have not checked the 1891 census, but I have been unable to find her in the 1901 census. Her father was for many years an Alderman with the Marylebone Council. When she died in 1915, she was living in Portland Place, not far from her place of birth. She was the purchaser of two Bleriot monoplanes, one of which was given to the Royan Naval Air Service. Just two photographs have been found of this lady, a few newspaper reports of her flying exploits. Two obituaries. She died in November 1915, but her death was not announced until January 1916. Why the delay, apparently at her own request is not known as yet. Letters of administration were issued in December, 1915. Both she and her father used the forename of Trehawke, although neither have this entered in the 1881 census. Does anyone, please, have any information, no matter how apparently trivial/minimal, on this interesting lady. Best wishes, Peter Donovan.
