Lewin was the son of the Reverend William George Davies (1821-1900) of Cardigan and Mary Jane Davies (nee Ball) of Bideford. Lewin's father, The Rev. William George Davies, was the rector of Llansantffraed Church and Llanvihangel Gobion. Lewin grew up in Nevill Street, Abergavenny and had five siblings - Laura Davies, William Davies, Jessie Emily Davies (who married Alfred Major G. Williams), Wallace Woodhouse Davies and Priscilla Dora Davies (who married Hugh William Proverbs). Lewin married Sarah Annette Mainwaring in 1885 and had two children, Wallace Lewin Hedley Davies (b.1888) and Dorothy Davies (b.1890). Lewin and Sarah lived in Regent Street and Lewin worked as a Railway Manager's Clerk at Abergavenny. In the 1899 Lewin left Wales to go to the Boer War. I don't believe he was a soldier as I am told he was working as a journalist there but I have no evidence to prove this. He sent photographs back to his family of the siege of Kimberley and of various railway stations that had been damaged by the Boers. The fact that he took photos of railway stations suggests to me that he may have been working for a British Railway company in Africa. Lewin returned to Wales in 1902. In the late 1910s or early 1920s Lewin left Wales to go the USA and he decided to stay there. He sent money for the fare back to his wife, Sarah, in Wales hoping that she would join him. Sarah did not wish to go and spent the money that he had sent. I do not know which area of America Lewin lived and I do not know what happened to him whilst he was there. I believe he died before 1941 because on Sarah's death certificate of the same year it states that she was the widow of Lewin Davies, Railway Correspondence Clerk. If anyone has any further information on Lewin Davies or any other member of his family I shall be most grateful.

I have a brick wall that needs breaking down!! Ionly have this information for my grand dad, Evan Davies age 30 years (1916) father John Davies Deceased. Evan was living in London, and got married in Lewisham 1916. I remember my dad saying that his dad's family were from the Tonypandy area, Trehorcy??, also that there was a relative who was deaf(?) and had a shop, sorry it is vague but have tried for 6 months and still nothing!! I do not even have his death details, but think between 1944-47 in Welwyn Garden City Hertfordshire. His children's names were Edward, William, Eric. Irene, Kathleen, none of these names appers in his wife's family so maybe they are on his side? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanking you Susan

If you know his birth date then you can phone up the register office and get them to send you a copy of the entry in the general register. it the GRO number (general register office) in the UK. Put www.GRO.co.uk in the computer and see what you get. there is a phone number and you can ring them, they are very helpful and charge for the service about 18 dollars to send you a certificate. the www.1837online.com register of pages will allow you to go through each page of 1923 under the name davies until you get a palce name, a page number and a volume number. As long as you have half of these then the lady at the register office will help you find the entry . If you get a birth certificate entry it will have on it the fathers name and the mothers name and maiden name. Then you put it into the 1901 census and see what you come up with. In the UK the census has a 100 year embargo so 1901 is the latest. If I can help in any other way please let me know and I will try. best wishes mark judge,

However the william born to Henry Davies and Hannah williams was William Lewis. Henry Davies of 70 Victoria Street had Henry 1856, crickhowell, Mary 1859 Goitre, William 1862 samuel 1864 and thomas 1869. Abergavenny is a town but also an area where births are registered. Put William Henry Davies in the search engine and see what comes up. I check the registry pages in www.1837online.com in the UK, but I do not know if that is possible in the states. Tap it in and try. You pay by credit card for 100 pages, it is not expensive. Davies is a very very common name in wales so I had a lot of trouble finding my family. I sent off for a certificate for a william Davies, and it came back william henry davies who married isabella robinson may 16th 1883 in Salford. I thought I had all the right names but it was not right, which was dissapointing. I have done this for a year and found what I wanted. I worked backwords, and got wedding certificates, and then worked out the fathers names and so on. I wish you luck best wishes mark judge
