My greatgrandfather, born Thomas Davies, 1853 in Wales is my brick wall. He immigrated to Catasauqua and married my greatgrandmother, Hannah Philips, born abt 1857 England married abt 1880-85 Catasauqua. I know nothing more about them. Here the mystery deepens: They had a son, Thomas Davies, b. 1/20/1885, Catasauqua. He was adopted or "taken in" by Oscar Levi and Minnie Sue Strohl after they married in 1894. Oscar Levi Strohl was from Millport, Lower Towamensing Twp, Lehigh Co. near Catasauqua. and Minnie Sue Frank Strohl was born in Freemansburg, and after marriage, they lived in Bethlehem. The original Thomas Davies and Hannah Davies disappear. No idea where or why they went, or why they put up son for adoption. I sure hope that we can make a connection.

My Dad, Edward Llewellyn Davies was born in 1910 - not sure if he was born in Wales and moved to London, or born in London but he was bought up in Canning Town. He did start his performing career busking on the streets of London, odd coincidence. He died in Ealing Hospital in 1984. He wasn't a drinker! Although we believe his father was!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/an/HNR.2ACEB/213.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Gillian, My grandfather (my mothers father) was an Edward Llewellyn Davies, born 1901 in Dowlais, Glamorgan, South Wales. He was the seventh son of William and Jane, both living in Dowlais He was an artist and piano player (busker). When his mother died in 1931 he sold the house and left my mother and her grandmother and went up to London to busk in the pubs. I think he probably was up there earlier than 1931 as he had a sister, Margaret, who died in the London blitz in 1939, I believe. A friend of his, Michael Mc Donald, also from Wales used to carry the cap to collect the money. Edward had jet black hair, darkish complection and large hands, a handsome man. I have a few photos of him. He never contacted my mother, that I know of. An aunt, who has since died, told me in confidence (not to tell my mother) that Edward had died on the London Embankment. He probably liked his drink, so his death may have been drink related. Does any of this seem to fit. I would dearly love to know what happened to him. best wishes Barrie Jones, Tredegar, Gwent

    1. Eleanor Josephine Trehawke Davies
    2. Peter Donovan
    3. Dear Members, Eleanor Josephine Trehawke Davies, was the first woman to cross the English Channel in a powered aeroplane, although as a passenger, not a pilot. She was the first woman in the world to loop-the-loop in an aeroplane, but again as a passenger. She was never an aviatrix. Both of the flights mentioned, as with many others, were made with Gustav Hamel as the pilot. Miss Davies flew with many of the leading aviators of the pre. WW1 period. She was born in the St. Pancras area of London in 1880. I have not checked the 1891 census, but I have been unable to find her in the 1901 census. Her father was for many years an Alderman with the Marylebone Council. When she died in 1915, she was living in Portland Place, not far from her place of birth. She was the purchaser of two Bleriot monoplanes, one of which was given to the Royan Naval Air Service. Just two photographs have been found of this lady, a few newspaper reports of her flying exploits. Two obituaries. She died in November 1915, but her death was not announced until January 1916. Why the delay, apparently at her own request is not known as yet. Letters of administration were issued in December, 1915. Both she and her father used the forename of Trehawke, although neither have this entered in the 1881 census. Does anyone, please, have any information, no matter how apparently trivial/minimal, on this interesting lady. Best wishes, Peter Donovan.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HNR.2ACEB/1224.3 Message Board Post: Frank, After doing all that research, I thought it would be a good idea to search the census for these keywords. In doing so, I found the following: In the 1881 British Census, there is an entry for a person who lived at the following address: No 7 Park Rd.Bycham in Ruabon This person's birthplace is listed as Cefn Bychan, Denbighshire, Wales A search at the Family History Library indicated that records exist for Cefn Bychan Welsh Baptist chapel : births 1798-1866 and monumental inscriptions. Cefn Bychan was part of the old parish of Rhiwabon and was later combined with Cefn Mawr, Acrefair, and Rhosymedre to form the new parish of Cefn. This record is listed under the subject heading Wales, Denbigh, Rhiwabon - Church records. Jeff

Surnames: Davies, Davis, Gildernew, Fellows, Skidmore, Bartberger, Cox Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HNR.2ACEB/1224.2 Message Board Post: Frank, I am not sure what or where penyr ochr cefn bycham is..however, the words are welsh (celtic) and definitions for the ones I could find are: "Ochr" is a surface at the edge of something such as the side of a building, or the side of a chasm, or the side of the bed, presumably because it is alongside or beside ("wrth ochr") the body of the object. cefn means - back, rear; garden bed; support, ridge There is a Lake called Cum Bycham in North Wales (not sure exactly where but it is referred to on the following web site: http://www.huh.harvard.edu/diatom/Terry/Cheever/CheeverB31B35.htm) penyr is more difficult to find references to, but I did find a few: 1) Pen Yr is some kind of hill/mountain range in Wales. Pictures can be found at: http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/wales_pics/penyr/penyr.htm A map of this area is here: http://encarta.msn.com/map_701607107/Pen_yr_Helgi_Du.html This is very far from Ruabon though. 2) The Welsh Triads as recorded in the Red Book of Hergest, ca. 1425 mention a person named Arnuawn Penyr the Arrogant. Maybe Penyr is something named after this person. 3) there is also mention of Penyr in an act passed in England that authorized the building of a railroad. An excerpt from that act is: "The Llanfihangel Railway Company," and empowered to make a railway from the coal wharf of the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, in the parish of Llanwenarth, to the village of Llainfihangel Crucorney, in the county of Monmouth, by or near the Cadvor, Penyr Worlod, Lanforst, and Maerdy, across the Usk, by or through the town of Abergavenny and other places, and to make inclined planes on the line. " 4) Penyr is also a common mis-spelling of the Welsh surname, Penry. 5) There is a Pen yr Ole Wen mountain in Glyders North Wales. There is a lake at the foot of this mountain. 6) There is the Village of Pen yr Heol in Monmouthshire, county of Wales Not sure if this is helpful, but thought I would pass it along. My guess is that Penyr and Bycham describe some landmark and that he died just behind the landmark right at the edge of it. The use of edge would imply, to me, this was a large landmark like a lake or mountain. However, I could find no landmarks in Ruabon that used these names. Jeff
