    3. Hi Listers, Although I do not normally post virus warnings to the list, I wanted all of you to know that there appears to be an onslaught of virus and worms "floating" around at this time. Please, folks, be very careful of opening attachments that may come with your email. If you see any attachments that use ".exe" after the name, contact the sender and ask if they have sent you an attachment. If they have not, then, delete the message immediately! Reading the email won't give you the virus or worm, but, the attachment will. Some of the worms and virus can make it look as if it has come from a friend or from a website that you visit. Please know that RootsWeb does not accept any attachments, therefore, you can not get any of this from being on the mailing lists. Visit http://www.mcafee.com or http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html for a list of new worms and such and try and keep your virus software updated. My best to all of you in this Holiday Season, Peggy Tebbetts

    2. Allen Brinkley
    3. Hi! I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, James Davies. I know this is like looking for a needle in a haystack but here goes: James Davies was born Dec. 28, 1859 in Wales and died Nov. 26, 1914 in Scranton, PA. He married Dinah Webb at Bethel Baptist Chapel in Blaina, Wales in 1881. They immigrated to the US in approx. 1888. James was the son of John Davies and Margaret James. To my knowledge, he was a coal miner all his life. I know a great deal about their lives and children once they arrived in the US but before that I know nothing. I am looking for information about his siblings and parents and I would love to find him and Dinah on the 188l census. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Melissa Brinkley I am looking for in

My G-G-Grandfather on my mothers side came to LONDON from WALES with his family, date unknown, but must have been late 1700 early 1800,they were tailors and set up business in that trade, I am told by my 90 year old Mum, that they also Bred Silkworms, did they get silk from these silkworms and make cloth, ? I am not sure on this. G-Grandfather moved to Haslemere SRY area and is understood to have Managed a Brickworks, his name was THOMAS DAVIES. D.O.B. etc unknown Another of the same family also came to Haslemere and Managed a Braid Works at Sicklemill, the braid was used I understand on Military Uniforms. Name unknown. My G.Father B; 1883 who was also THOMAS DAVIES was a Brickmaker by trade,he also came to Haslemere, this is where he settled and married ELIZA DURRANT from KIRDFORD SSX B:1885, date of marriage not known. SAMUEL DAVIES and MAE lived at 21 Baxter Street- Standish-Wigan England until his death within the last 15 years. WILLIAM and ANNE ROBY DAVIES were active members of the Standish Methodist Church on High Street.Could anyone tell me if there is a cemetery there that might have their tombstones. Their children were also members of the Church. Is anyone familiar with this Church? I think WILLIAM ELLIS DAVIES also immigrated to USA and was killed in a Mine accident in Sullivan Co.,Ind. In a Will of ROSANNA LOWE dated Dec.1983 she left her estate to members of the DAVIES families. Some of the surnames listed were: HOCKING-BIRKET-TYRER-ROSCOE-PARROTT-GRAY-FARRIMOND-TAYLOR-FAIRHURST WOODS-WILKINSON-DRAPER-LOWTON-EDMONDSON-BROWN-RICH-LINDQUIST-ATTACK CHADWICK-BROWN-DOBSON-JEWELL-BROMILOW-FISHER-ASHCROFT-EASTHAM-MYERS PRICE. I know some of the cousins went to Australia and one of Lambert's daughters lived in Singapore. She married a teacher and he taught English there.SAM AND MAE DAVIES had grandchildren living on Baxter Street,Standish,Wigan,England. Are there any cousins left in England that have done research on this family. I would love to find some descendants of WILLIAM and ANNE ROBY DAVIES to find out where the family originated.I have always been told Wales, but DAVIES is a common name and not knowing where in Wales makes a search pretty difficult. Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone. Will gladly share any info.Thanks-Joyce

    3. I'll throw in my Davies too. I have Thomas Davies born England around 1835. Came in to this country through Pennsylvania and eventually settled in Marietta Oh. Washington Co. Married Rachel Dearth in 1859 and had children: John, Ann, Charles, James Lewellyn, b. 1866 and William M. Davies b. 1868. Thomas was a carpenter and probably lived around Washington Co. for about 20 years. The next time I found him he was with a new wife, Bertha or Orpha living in Newport Ky. in 1894 and working in Cincinnati. Finally, I found them again in 1900, Dayton, Oh. Been tracking these folks up and down the Ohio River for a long time. Judy

    3. Hi Dick, As you say, there are so many William Davies's your search is going to be very difficult. I see that your William was born at Llanelli, there are two Llanelli's in Wales, one in Carmarthenshire and one in Monmouthshire. I think it most likely that the correct one is Monmouthshire. Have you tried the Gwent FHS which covers this area? They have a web site http://welcome.to/gwent.fhs Why not give them a try? Good searching Marjorie

    2. Hi, Listers: This seems like a good time to post my brick wall. I'm looking for parents and siblings of my great-grandfather William DAVIES. This is my mother's side of the family. About two years ago I posted to a couple of lists but the name of William is so common that it appeared to be hopeless. Guess I need to do a conventional paper search at some point. If any of the data on the following page rings any bells with anyone, please let me know. Especially if Marjorie has any ideas. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Foothills/5212/davies1.html Thanks, Dick Watts [email protected] Stoneham, MA Sponsor of RootsWeb Genealogy Interests: http://www.geocities.com:80/SiliconValley/Foothills/5212/more/signature.html

    3. Emrys, I can't help you at all, but at least your email is out there. My Davies line extends back to a John Davies (b.29/6/1836 d.25/12/1889). He emmigrated from London in about 1860/1870 to be the one of the first Govt. Stamp Printer in New Zealand. He married Maria Elizabeth Day, they had 13 children. His parents were David & Mary Davies. Does anyone link up with these names? Thanks, Colin in sunny Sydney -----Original Message----- From: Emrys Williams [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, 10 November 1999 6:13 To: [email protected] Subject: [DAVIES] Is there anybody there? Hello All, I joined this list on 3rd. November and expected to be overwhelmed by the volume of messages as DAVIES is such a popular name (I won't say common!). But I have received none at all in that time, am I registered properly? To test whether I am really a member of the list, I am posting this query to see what happens! My maiden name was Davies, but I have been surprised to discover during the course of my researches into my family tree, that I am descended from no fewer than 4 lines of Davies's, none of which are connected. Two of the lines come from Wales, one from Shropshire and the other from Cheshire. My direct line of Davies's i.e. my father's name, comes via Guilsfield Montgomeryshire, where my Grandfather Eli Davies was born in Nov.1870. His father was Charles Davies born Montgomery town, Montgomeryshire in August 1832, and his father before him was George Davies born at Presteigne, Radnorshire in September 1789. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? I know that several of Charles Davies's brothers and their families moved to live and work in the Staffordshire/Midlands area of England in the 1850's in order to find work, mostly in the iron industry. I have quite a lot of detail on these families. I do hope that this message finds it's way into somebody's computer, and it just doesn't disappear into the ether! Cheerio Marjorie

    3. Hi Everyone, Very many thanks to all who replied to my plea for contact with the Davies Listers, I am really pleased that so many of you took the time and trouble to respond! I can see from the volume of replies that there are a lot of helpful and kind people out there, and I'm looking forward to belonging to this list, and in return, perhaps assisting others where I can. Many folks mentioned that they have traced their families back to Wales, you all probably know already about the roostwebs lists which exist for various regions in the country, if you haven't tried them out yet, why not give them a try? I have found them to be most helpful. The various Family History Societies which cover the different areas in Wales, are also very much worth a mention. You can advertise your interests in the society magazines, and members will often go out of their way to help one another. If anyone knows which town/area of Wales that their Davies's came from, but are uncertain which would be the appropriate rootsweb group or Family History Society to contact, let me know, and I can advise you about it. Thanks again everybody, you've made my day! Marjorie.
