Dave, I agree with you and think we are talking about different Williams -- as well as a different Davidson family. Many people think my John Davidson (born 1761) was the John Davidson of Hanging Rock fame who married a Gillham. Even some of my own "new" email cousins. I feel sure he is not. I have my John Davidson's war records and pension application. He stated he was born in Pennsylvania -- moved to Union District, South Carolina as a young boy. He enlisted to fight in the Revolution when he was only 16. After the war, he settled in Jasper County, Georgia. He died there in 1856. His father (another John Davidson) died about 1801 -- probably in Union District, South Carolina. I don't know anything about him. Information says another (your?) John Davidson died during the Battle at Hanging Rock, South Carolina on 6 August 1780. These dates would not connect me to John Davidson of Hanging Rock. Two of my John Davidson's brothers did leave Union District, South Carolina and settle in Mt. Zion, IL. However, they were not born in Ireland. They were born either in Pennsylvania or South Carolina. It is interesting that they, too, were named William and Samuel Davidson. To add more fun for us -- William and Samuel married cousins with the same name. They both married ladies named Elizabeth Mayes. WOW!! My ggguncle William Davidson's descendants can be found in the DNA Davidson kit # 62919. From the research I have done in Mt. Zion -- all of the information included in this kit is accurate. My family kit can be found in the same yellow family group as the descendant of William Davidson. My kit # 63100 is a perfect match with William Davidson kit # 62919. At last I know this relationship is valid. The supposition at this time is their parents were John and Tabitha Davidson. I believe the John Davidson killed at Hanging Rock -- married to Sarah or Sally Gillham has an entirely different background. Even the South Carolina genealogists are just realizing that there were at least THREE John Davidsons around Union District, South Carolina during the Revolution. I am told they are correcting some of these mistakes made by researchers many years ago. My Davidsons are connected to the Mayes, Parks, Means, Story and Shaw families. Also, my John Davidson (probably the Sr.) was an elder in the Fairforest Church. My guess work about the new Indiana information concerning my William Davidson -- is that long ago researchers got him mixed up with another William Davidson who did go to Indiana and, maybe, settled in Illinois. In all the literature I found in Mt. Zion -- I never once saw Indiana mentioned. However, I am keeping an open mind about all of it for now. As for what I know about Union District, South Carolina. Not much. I ordered a fantastic book by Robert (Bob) J. Stevens that covers the Union District area. The title is "The Legacy of Father James H. Saye 1801 - 1892. * A Presbyterian Divine * A collection of His Historical and Genealogical Treasures of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia." It is a large hard back book -- over 500 pages. I have only started to read it. Anna Gayle
