I am trying to clarify a birth date for William Davidson. If any of his descendants are on this list, please let me hear from you. For several years, I have thought William Davidson (born in Pennsylvania or South Carolina to John Davidson and "maybe" Tabitha) was born August 6, 1776. The first place I found this date was in Leaves of the Tree by H. Grady Wilson, Jr. I have since found 1776 repeated in several places. Recently, a descendant of William Davidson brought to my attention that her records show he was born August 6, 1766. This date was substantiated with some church and cemetery records I found in Mount Zion, Illinois. These records show he was born in 1766 and died December 1837. I had overlooked the conflicting birth dates until now. If his birth date was 1766 -- this fills in the ten year gap where it seemed his parents had no children. Also, it means he was married when he was 29 -- which seems more feasible then 39. William was married in 1795 to Elizabeth Mayes, daughter of Thomas Mayes, in South Carolina. She was born May 14, 1775 and died 1840 or 1841. Church records show William and Elizabeth are buried in the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Cemetery, but there are no headstones for them. Their descendents do have headstones in this cemetery and Mt. Zion has documented much information about this family. William and Elizabeth Mayes Davidson's children were: 1. Jane born 1796 in South Carolina -- buried in Illinois at the North Fork Presbyterian Church -- married to William Fields. 2. John William born 1803 in South Carolina -- buried behind Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church -- married Rhoda Travis. 3. Sarah born 1805 in South Carolina -- buried behind the Mt Zion Presbyterian Church. Married Thomas Travis. 4. Thomas D. both 1806 in South Carolina -- buried behind the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church. Married Celia H. ? 5. Eleanor (Ellen) born 1809 in S. C. -- buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery next to John H. Davidson. Married Abraham Black 6. William Jr. born 1810 in South Carolina and died 1858. Buried behind the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. Married Melissa W. Campbell. 7. Andrew born 1812 (unknown location) buried behind the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. Never married. 8. Mary M. was born 1815 (unknown location) and died 1856. Buried behind the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. Married Alford G. Debaler. William Davidson, Sr and my ggggrandfather, John Davidson (Pennsylvania>South Carolina>Georgia) were brothers.
