    1. Re: [DAVIDSON] of Grainger Co.
    2. Bill Davidson
    3. JDD, Here are the results of my research (with a LOT of help from others): 1 David Davidson-Was in James City Co., VA by at least 1682, per a later land deed where his son (who was also named David) received his father's land in the early 1700s. The son named David was probably VERY young when his father died in 1687. The older David's 1686 naturalization papers (I have the transcription) showed that he was born in Holland. The older David Davidson died in James City Co., VA in 1687, and he was married to a Sarah Unknown (per a court order book entry on his will). Note: A William Davidson also died in James City Co., VA in 1687 (per a Bruton/Middleton Parish record). I do not know how/if William Davidson was related to the above David Davidson, and do not know if he could have been the ancestor of some of the following people. Note: The Davidson land in James City Co., VA (JCCo) became part of Charles City Co., VA (CCCo) in 1720. This land was/is just west of where the Chicahominy River runs basically north/south. 2 David Davidson "II"-Died in 1756 in CCCo (wife unknown). David Davidson was mentioned on a couple of deed records in CCCo with a Thomas Hix. A Stephen Davidson was the executor of David's will in 1756, and Stephen Davidson was later sued in CCCo Chancery Court by an Ezekiel Davidson (in 1762). Ezekiel Davidson died later in 1762, and a Philemon Davidson was the executor his Ezekiel's will. Philemon Davidson died in CCCo in 1773. There was also a Solomon Davidson in this family, it appears, and he was married to a Mary Unknown (possibly Mary Dancy, since a Benjamin Dancy called Mary Davidson his niece in his own will in the 1760s). Solomon Davidson apparently had the David Davidson who married Mary Maza Phillips in CCCo in the 1790s, and that David Davidson was in the Rev. War. That David Davidson died in Halifax Co., VA in the 1820s, and he and his wife Maza had a Moses Davidson and a Solomon Davidson (and some daughters). The EXACT relationship between David Davidson "II" and Stephen, Ezekiel, Solomon and Philemon Davidson is not proven. 3 Edward, David and William Davidson-These were apparant brothers, and they were in Goochland Co., VA on ther 1746 tithe list (Southam Parish). They were probably sons of the above David Davidson "II", but as stated above, I'm not sure about that William Davidson who died in JCCo in 1687 (did he have any sons)? Their land became part of Cumberland Co., VA in 1749, and David bought 400 acres of land in Albemarle Co., VA in 1759. In 1761, Buckingham Co., VA was created from a part of Albemarle Co., VA, and Edward, David and William Davidson then all appeared on the 1764 Buckingham Co., VA tithe list. Also appearing on that list was a William Davidson, Junior (living in his own household) and yet another/third William Davidson (living in the home of David Davidson; I suspect that he was a son of David Davidson). A Charles Davidson was also on that 1764 Buckingham list. Charles was also in his own household, and later information shows that Charles was a son of Edward Davidson. Edward Davidson also had a son named Edward "Junior," and he MIGHT have been the Edward Davidson who died by 1777 in Anson Co., NC (but not proven). When the older Edward Davidson wrote his will in Campbell Co., VA in 1794 (Campbell was created from Bedford Co., VA in 1782, and the older Edward had moved from Buckingham to Bedford Co., VA sometime after 1774), he did not mention a living son named Edward. The older Edward was married to an Agnes Mosby, but there are some clues that suggest that she may not have been his first wife. The older Edward also had sons named David Mosby Davidson (died in 1793, apparently without a wife or any children; his 1793 will left everything to his father Edward) and the above-mentioned Charles Davidson. Charles was the only living son that was mentioned in Edward's 1794 will (and Charles had a son named John Benning Davidson; unlike his father Edward, Charles and his son stayed in the Buckingham area, and they later moved across the county line to Cumberland Co., VA in the early 1780s). "Old" Edward's apparent brother David Davidson died in Buckingham by 1798, and he was married to a Mary (probably Mary Giles), and she may or may not have been David's first wife. David Davidson had known sons named William (the one in David's home in 1764, I suspect), Stephen (born about 1757 in Cumberland Co., VA; died 1830s in Buckingham), Edward (died 1820s in Buckingham; was married to Judith Pendleton and was at Valley Forge), Giles (died in Amherst Co., VA in 1848; was married to Jemina Pendleton and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis) and Josiah Davidson (died in Appomattox Co., VA in his 80s in the 1850s). It appears that David's son named William was the one who married Martha Baker of Prince Edward Co., VA and who moved to Botetourt Co., VA by about 1774. Note: It is possible that it was the son of William Davidson versus the son of David Davidson who married Martha Baker, and/or is even POSSIBLE that there could have been yet another/fourth William Davidson in this overall family in Buckingham who married Martha. The son of David named William Davidson, however, currently seems like the most "likely candidate" to have married Martha Baker. The apparent brother of Edward and David Davidson in Goochland/Cumberland/Albemarle/Buckingham was William Davidson. It appears that William Davidson moved from Buckingham Co., VA to Pittsylvania Co., VA by the late-1760s (he was not on the 1773/1774 tithe list in Buckingham), and a William Davidson, a Richard Davidson and a John Davidson all appeared on some records there. These same three names then appeared in Henry Co., VA, after Henry was created from Pittsylvania in 1776/1777. It appears that Richard and John were children of William's, and it appears that William had three other sons named William "Junior," David and Goulder Davidson. Based on the unusual name of Goulder, as well as the names Richard and John, it seems almost certain that the older William Davidson had married a Hix women (that family used all of those names, and the Hix family had close connections with the Davidsons back in CCCo in the early 1700s, and the Hix family also had several members who appeared on the 1746 tithe list back in Goochland Co., VA, where the Davidson were at that time). The son of the older William Davidson named David lived across the state line from Henry Co., VA in Stokes Co., NC. David Davidson bought land in Stokes in the late-1770s, and David appeared on the 1790 census there, as did a John and Richard Davidson. David's daughter Lavinia Davidson married back up in Patrick Co., VA in 1795 (Patrick was created from Henry in 1790/1791). Goulder Davidson continued to appear in Patrick Co., VA records through about 1803/1804 or so, and Goulder then moved to Grainger Co., TN. It appears that David also moved to Grainger Co., TN, and it appears that the Edward Davidson that you mentioned in your post was very likely the son of that David Davidson. There was an Edward Davidson on the 1810 Grainger Co., TN census, and a Susannah Davidson (over age 45) was also on that census. It is POSSIBLE that this Susannah (Unknown) Davidson was the widow of David Davidson (and hence, MAYBE the mother of Edward). The Davidsons in Henry/Patrick married into the Fields family on more than one occasion, and there was a later man in that overall Fields family who was named Goulder Fields. The Edward Davidson (likely son of David and Susannah (Unknown) Davidson) had a son who was also named David, and that David Davidson married Nancy Fields in Marshall Co., AL (and Nancy was a daughter of the above mentioned Goulder Fields) . Goulder Davidson had a known son named Joshua, and Joshua Davidson married Elizabeth Sharp in May 1814 in Claiborne Co., TN. Goulder, his son Joshua and Goulder's likely nephew Edward Davidson were all in Alabama by about 1816 or so. Joshua and Elizabeth (Sharp) Davidson had 14 children, two of which were William F. Davidson and Major Henry Davidson (who was in the War Between the States). The 1830 Morgan Co, AL census showed several Davidsons: Allen (MAY have been another son of Goulder Davidson), Joshua, Richard, William and Henry (it also showed a man named Davidson Willis, and Lavinia Davidson, the above-mentioned daughter of David Davidson of Stokes Co., NC, had married a Mr. Willis in 1795 in Patrick Co., VA). It APPEARS that the William Davidson, Junior, who was the apparent son of the "old" William Davidson of Goochland/Cumberland/Albemarle/Buckingham/Pittsylvania/Henry Co., VA, was the William Davidson who moved to Orange Co., NC by 1780. That William Davidson in Orange/Guilford Co., NC sons named William, David and Josiah Davidson, plus several daughters. My DNA match has traced his family back to that William Davidson in Orange/Guilford Co., NC. My 5th ggf was Hezekiah Davidson of Albemarle (was an adult there in the 1740s) and Cumberland Co., VA (Hezekiah died in Cumberland Co., VA in 1793; was married to Tabitha Childers/Childress). I had always suspected that Hezekiah was also out of the "JCCo/CCCo Davidsons," and the above DNA match SEEMS to support that (though I still need to PROVE that the William Davidson in Orange Co., NC in 1780 was, in fact, out of the "Buckingham/Pittsylvania/Henry/Patrick Co., VA Davidsons." Based on several clues, however, including "naming conventions," this "connection" certainly seems VERY likely. Comments? Are there any living Davidson males from your family who could join the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA Project? http://www.tqsi.com/davidsongenes/ Best regards, Bill Davidson

    3. Bill - Your information on the Alabama Davidson was interesting. I am hoping to obtain information on William W. Davidson, born around 1820 in South Carolina, parents and location unknown. William married Elizabeth Nailer Riggan on December 24, 1849, and settled in Detroit, AL (Marion County). Three children were born of that marriage: James A. Davidson, my great-great grandfather, (born January 4, 1855), Howard Davidson (born in 1856), and Nathaniel Davidson (born in 1858). I have no later information on Howard or Nathaniel. A business was operated in Detroit, AL as Davidson and Brothers, dealing in dry goods through the 1880's. My grandfather was James Andrew Davidson, Jr. born in Detroit, AL in 1892, married to Stella Guin. Any information regarding William, Howard or Nathaniel W. Davidson would be greatly appreciated. 3. Barry, I'm sorry, but I don't think that I have any information on your Davidsons in SC. Have you joined the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA Project? Your DNA results could potentially tell you "instantly" to which Davidson family you belong. http://www.tqsi.com/davidsongenes/ You might want to look at the results for the existing 75+ members/donors listed in the above website at: http://www.tqsi.com/davidsongenes/results.php Best regards, Bill
