Hi there! Last August, my husband and I went to Gibson and Madison County, TN to research his side of the family -- not mine. My ancestors were Davidson's. During the research, we went to the Jackson/Madison County Library. I could have spent days on end there. We actually joined an online program for $10.00 that the library has available. Jack D. Wood was one of the librarians in the Tennessee Room for genealogy research. He was a treasure, as were all the librarians there. It was hard for me to stay focused on the McClure's (husband), because I kept seeing wonderful old records about Davidson's from that area. Since I do not think they were my direct Davidson's, I just drooled a little at the amount of information and kept working on the McClure's for him. However, I would like to give you the address of the library and other information. Jackson/Madison County Library 422 East Lafayette Street Jackson, TN 38301 (731) 425-8600 _www.jmcl.tn.org_ (http://www.jmcl.tn.org) email: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) We stopped at several old churches throughout the area -- most had well-kept cemeteries right next to them. I saw many Davidson headstones. It was interesting -- it seemed as if first and second wives/husbands were all located in the same area of the cemetery with each other -- as were the children from both sets of families. I assume they were all neighbors and when a spouse died -- the remaining person didn't stay single for long. When we could connect with someone from a church, they were helpful about sharing the church archives. We, also, crossed Davidson Creeks and saw Davidson Lanes, etc. There is no doubt there were Davidson's in Trenton, Gibson County, Jackson and Madison County, TN. I suspect records are still available. Another great resource was at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. It is about 30 to 40 miles north of the TN and KY state line. The University has an incredible genealogy room -- with lots of information about Davidson's in Kentucky and Tennessee. Again, it was hard for me to stay focused on the McClure's --but it was my husband's birthday treat to research HIS McClure ancestors. I just wanted to give you the name of one of the library's that was the most helpful to us. Hopefully, it could help Davidson researchers in Tennessee. Good luck. Anna Gayle DAVIDSON McClure
Anna Gayle, I would love to spend time looking through their records. Most of those Davidsons are fairly closely related to me. My own ancestors were briefly in that area after the Civil War. john.
