    3. Anna Gayle, You can upgrade at any time. The kit is just a cheek swab to get a sample. The same sample can be used (and re-used) to perform almost all of the tests. Upgrading just means that they analyze more of the DNA sample. I think that waiting to get your results from a 37 marker test before upgrading is reasonable. However, anyone whose data matches a known family would likely get benefit from upgrading to the 59 markers. As we are learning from the results that are in so far, the 12 marker test is not very informative. It will tell you if you do not match a known family and may indicate what Haplogroup you are in. It will not tell you that you match a family as we have seen many 12/12 matches to completely different families. We have also seen 12/12 matches that become 19/25 matches when you upgrade to 25 markers. The greater number of markers that match, the higher the likelihood of a common ancestor. And eventually, with 59 markers, we will likely be able to recognize specific ancestor lines. It is important for the study that you submit your Davidson pedigree information, either on the web site www.davidsongenes.org or to Dave Koester at [email protected] john.
