Enlisted 72nd Regiment of Foot 26th September 1846 aged 17yrs 10 months, height 5’ 5 1/4”, religion Presbyterian (later C of E?). Promoted Corporal 15th February 1848. Stationed Horefield Barracks Bristol 1851 Jailed at Gloucester County Gaol, Mar 1851. Stole 6 silver forks. Nine months hard labour. Reduced to Private 11th July 1851(?). Civil Offence. Transferred to 79th Highlanders 19th March 1854. Embarked for Crimea 24th May 1854 with 79th Highlanders on HMS Simoom. Battles at Sebastopol, Balaclava, Alma. Landed in England 15th July 1856. Embarked for India 31st July 1857. Landed in India 22nd November 1857. At relief of Lucknow. Child (Elizabeth Mary) born 8th September 1862. Nowshera, Bengal Presidency, India (poss dead by 1871) Married Cecelia McColl 2nd May 1863. Nowshera, India. Child ( Robert) born 30th January 1865 Rawulpindee, India Child (Margaret Stewart) born 14th September 1867. Christened 11 Nov 1867 Roorkee, West Bengal, India. (poss alive 1871) Landed England 7th May 1868. Discharged 28th August 1869 at Sterling Castle aged 40 yrs 9 months, height 5’ 113/4”. Settled 48 Cowlairs Road, Cowlairs, Springburn, near Glasgow (now in centre of Glasgow!) Died 6 am, 03 January1873 at the Royal Infirmary Glasgow aged 43, pensioner. Cause of death Aortic disease. Widow Cecilia present. (Ref 644/2 number 14) Cecilia died July 1st 1880 aged 48 from an intestinal haemorrhage. Registered in the district of Bridgeton. (Her death cert says Robert a pensioner of 92nd of foot?) Robert’s Grandson (my grandfather) Robert Francis Cooper Davidson, born 8.40 am 19 June 1900 at 124 McLean Street, Govan, Glasgow. Father Robert Davidson (marine engineer), Mother Ada Mary Davidson, nee Greaves. Married 10th December 1897. Registered in district of Plantation. Her husband Robert believed died 1904/05 Ada Mary Davidson remarried a Mr Macintosh and gave birth to William, great uncle (now deceased).
