    1. Re: [DAVIDSON] John Davison
    2. Hi Bill, You are correct. Judge Marion R. Davidson is related to Family # 3 (yellow) in the DNA project. He was the son of Baxter Davidson from Illinois. Baxter was the son of Samuel Davidson. Samuel was the brother to Connie's great great great grandfather, William Davidson, of Mt. Zion, IL. They were both brothers to my ggggrandfather, John Davidson, of Jasper County, Georgia. Judge Davidson wrote a relative in 1900 who wanted to know more about the family. I have a copy of his letter which I got from the Mt. Zion library collection. It is very interesting. It told how Samuel and William Davidson lived so close to the Battle of Cowpens that they could hear the fighting. John, their brother, was in the Revolution at the young age of 16. Samuel and William were too young to join. In the letter, Judge Davidson says he was named after Marion (The Swamp Fox) who was in this battle. This Davidson family moved from Pennsylvania to Union District, South Carolina before the American Revolution. Some of the children of John (Sr.) and Tabitha (maybe Tabitha) were born in Pennsylvania (my John) and some were born in South Carolina (William and Samuel). William and Samuel married same named cousins -- both Elizabeth Mayes. The mother of Samuel's wife Mary Rutherford -- married to Andrew Mayes. The mother of William's wife was Jean Rutherford married to Thomas Mayes. All of the above is from the library and church records in Mt. Zion. William and Samuel left South Carolina for Illinois. John left South Carolina for Georgia. In Judge Davidson's letter he said that he was told some of the younger Davidsons (which would have been Samuel according to the records I have at this time.) went to Tennessee after leaving South Carolina and before settling in Illinois. However, there were other brothers. They were James and Joseph. James and Joseph Davidson "may" have been younger than John, William and Samuel Davidson. I have limited information about them and no birth dates. Whenever this family is mentioned -- it seems to be assumed that James and Joseph were older -- but I can not prove this one way or the other. Maybe "they" went to Tennessee. I do think James and Joseph could be the connection with other people in Family # 3. There is such an incredible amount of information on this family in the Mt. Zion library -- that I cannot imagine there won't be some mention of a Tennessee connection in the archives. Sadly (at least to me -- because Mount Zion is a small town and everything is so easy to research), I have heard much of the old genealogy material has been sent to Springfield...and may be in storage. When I was in Mt. Zion several years ago, the library was in the process of removing some of their genealogy material to larger libraries in Illinois. At the time, I only thought (according to family tradition and some research) that Connie and I were related. Now, I know it through the DNA project and wish I had spent days in Mount Zion.
