Hello John, I know (from my skimpy knowledge of your country's geography) that you probably won't be going anywhere near Ohio, but just for your interest here is a transcript I copied from the church at Boarhills, Fife, a number of years ago while travelling in that area in search of Davidson ancestral evidence. The stone had just been cleaned of lichen, and when I went past again a couple of years ago it had grown over again and was barely legible, so I was lucky to see it clean back in the 1980's. Here is the wording: Erected by the family In memory of their Father Thomas Davidson who died 11th June 1825 aged 75 years Also Penelope Gardner their Mother who died 20th September 1849 aged 89 years Also Isabella Gourley Spouse of David Davidson who died 17th Febry 1834 aged 35 years Likewise Helen daughter of James Davidson who died 8th July 1835 aged 6 months Also Catherine Forsyth spouse of James Davidson who died 20th July 1867 aged 68 years Also the said James Davidson who died 20th March 1880 aged 78 years Also Elspeth Davidson who died 3rd March 1876 aged 84 years [and on the North side of the same stone] Sacred Also to the memory of Thomas Davidson Junr. who died 8th August 1864 Aged 74 years Also David Davidson who died 7th Feb. 1867 Aged 67 years also Elizabeth Davidson, who died in Ohio, United States of America, 1st May 1875 aged 79 years Also Helen Davidson, who died in Ohio, United States of America, 28th July 1878 aged 80 years also Jane Bonthrone, spouse of Thomas Davidson who died 30th April 1888, aged 84 years 'I know that my Redeemer liveth' Boarhills is a tiny locality south of St Andrews, where my great-great-grandfather John Davidson was born 23rd November 1786. His father was James Davidson who lived mainly in Kingsbarns, a larger village a few miles to the south of Boarhills - and in turn, a few miles north of Crail, where my great-grandfather William Davidson was born in 1807, so I would assume the Davidsons on the tombstone would have been fairly close connections of mine. One of William's sisters, Elisabeth (spelt thus) died in Kentucky, wife of Joseph Hunter, but I don't have the date nor any details of the migration. What is interesting is the death of Elizabeth and Helen in Ohio, in 1875 and 1878 respectively. Hope this is all not too confusing - Best wishes Frank Davidson (Kit 50096) Dr Frank Sutherland Davidson President CLAN DAVIDSON SOCIETY IN AUSTRALIA 23 Elizabeth Street Paddington, NSW 2021 AUSTRALIA Tel: +61 (0)2 9361 3810 Mob: 0425 263 705 E: frankdavidson@chilli.net.au
