Hi, I don't think we'll ever know for sure which William this is. But this does make me wonder more about a couple of things. Is this George Davidson - The George I. Davidson whose daughter Rebecca Anne Davidson married my Great Grandfather James O. Davidson. If it is then is he also son of Jacob Davidson? Carroll Davison and I both believe that George W. Davidson son of George I. Davidson is Carroll's GG Grandfather. If so it would indicate more inter-marrying in the Davidson line as Carroll and I are closely linked by DNA in family 4. In notes I received from my Mother's research in the late 1980's she shows James O. Davidson as marrying Rebecca Anne Davis - not Davidson. But I have Rebecca's death certificate and she is clearly daughter of George I. Davidson, not a Davis. Could she have just made a mistake or was it an attempt to hide inter-marrying?? In Shiloh cemetery there is a George I. Davis - occupation Blacksmith buried there. G. I. Davidson died in the Civil war. One more item: William Davidson, son of James and Hannah of Jefferson County, Tn., had a brother named Jacob. I have long believed Jacob and Wiliam in Hardin County were brothers. But I see from the below entry that Jacob signed with his "X". Queston is if he were a Quaker how likely would it be that he could have never learned to write??? I thought quakers were big on education.. "Hardin County Deed Book G, page 317: For love and affection for his son Jeremiah Davidson, Jacob Davidson gives land - 23 acres and another tract of 50 acres 1 Nov 1845. Signed by his Mark "X" (Jacob Davidson). And since I am rambling on and on wondering about school records for the early 1800's. I never see any reference to anyone mentioning them. Is it because no records were kept? Any comments welcomed. Laroice - the reason that Jacob and William Davidson in the 1830 Hardin Co, TN census are not brothers is because their birthdays do not fit. If you remember, Jacob Davidson signed William Davidson and Eleanor Selvidge's marriage bond in Jefferson CO, TN in 1819 with an X while William signed his name. Additionally, when Eleanor and Sarah Selvidge Davidson's father, Jeremiah Selvidge, died in Roane Co, TN in 1827, William and Jacob Davidson signed the receipt for their wives share of his estate which was $10 each. William signed his name for Eleanor's share and Jacob signed Sarah's receipt with an X. So all along, this is the same Jacob Davidson who went to Hardin CO, TN with William. (They were living next to each other in the 1830 Hardin Co, TN census). Who was this Jacob? Was he the son of James and Hannah. That Jacob's birth date was 26 Mar 1790 by Quaker records and is a little off with the 1850 census record of Jacob, but sometimes those dates are not exact as we would like. William, the son of James and Hannah Davidson's birth date was 27 Sep 1783. The William Davidson that married Eleanor Selvidge's birthday was 26 Jan 1801. This William Davidson that was with Jacob in Hardin Co, TN left Hardin Co, TN after the death of his wife, Eleanor, in 1848 and was in DeSoto Co, MS in the 1850 census along with his children, (some of whom were married by then) and in Memphis, TN in the 1860 census. He died in Memphis, TN in 1880. He probably moved there to be near his daughter, Jane Davidson Selvidge (married a Jeremiah Selvidge) to help him care for her younger siblings. I thought that it had already been established that George I Davidson was the son of Jacob Davidson, just can't remember how. Both Eleanor and Sarah Selvidge Davidson (died before the 1840 census) named sons Jeremiah after their father, Jeremiah Selvidge, - thus following the naming patterns of that time. They usually named the first born son after the mother's father and that was the case of Eleanor, whose first born son was named Jeremiah - however, he died shortly after birth. So it would seem, based on your information, that you are a direct descendent of this Jacob Davidson. - Amy Windsor -----Original Message----- From: davidson-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:davidson-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Laroice Davidson Sent: Sunday, January 24, 2010 1:17 PM To: davidson@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DAVIDSON] Davidson miscellaneous Hi, I don't think we'll ever know for sure which William this is. Amy and Laroice, I assume that the older of "your" two William Davidsons was the one who married Hanna Oaks on 16 Jan 1804 in Grainger Co., TN. It is interesting to note that your DNA "Family 4," as well as DNA "Family 7" and DNA "Family 10," all had members in Grainger around that time. Bill Davidson
