Posted on: Davidson Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Davidson/10492 Surname: Davison, Owen, Brackett, McDearmonroe ------------------------- Regrettably, much erroneous information is posted on the internet and is subject of some poor, unfounded matters published as fact in some genealogies and in some books related to genealogy (Worth Ray is good example.). Factually, John and Ann Davison's origin is work in progress and, I hope will start to be treated that way by more of those interested in this family. What is known is that John and Ann Davison were in Orange Co, VA from its origin in 1734 (and probably there when a part of Spotsylvania County -- work yet to be done to research latter county). This is Orange County location supported by deed book entries and by court records for roads and other matters. A bit of caution, however, because there later on came to Orange County (I preliminarily believe in the Augusta County part of what was then Orange.) another John Davison whose wife was named Jean. They imported themselves from Ireland as recorded in court affidavit in 1740. I have noticed some mixing of the two in other genealogy work. About 1741 (could be 1742 for the present calendar), John and Ann Davison desposed of leased land in Orange Co, VA and moved to the Mountain Creek/Bush River area of what is now Prince Edward Co, VA. Others that appear to make that move at about the same time include Henry Goodloe, a large land holder in Orange and in Prince Edward. Also, William and Elizabeth Brown made the move. William Brown appears to have a special relationship as evidenced by witnessing John Davison's Will/estate matters; although he was not a nearby neighbor in Prince Edward Co, VA during 1754 estate actions. For John Davison's name spelling; he always signed his papers as "John Davison" and his wife Ann was consistent with an "X". The Davidson (second "d") spelling was used by second and third parties to record what they "heard". Similarly, John's sons used the Davison spelling for their signature as far as I have researched on original documents. Also, later generations of males and all wives that could not write, oftentimes had Davidson spelling written in with their "X" by others. I have seen that subsequently some of the "X" signers learned to write a signature and sometimes they picked up the "second d" version. I hope all who work this family will attempt to stick to the facts and avoid speculation. I am amazed at the wealth of misinformation that has accumulated. If all will do that, it will facilitate good documentation of this family that we can share with confidence.
