I Received this from John L. thought you might want to read and act or re-act. Mary B. From: john. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Please excuse this off-topic post; however, during this past week, I have been pummelled with viruses attached to data sent to me by several people, some from people on this list. If I am getting them, then that means that others of you are probably also getting viruses or have them and are spreading them, and most may not know it is even happening. If you are using your PC for business or for keeping important personal records or for maintaining your family history, you need to be vigilant about viruses. I had seen many recommendations recently for a free web-based anti-virus service www.antivirus.com . They have a service called HouseCall for PCs. I suggest that you try it out, even if you are using a commercial product. I use Norton AV, and it seems to do a good job. I keep my signatures up to date, etc. But, after receiving several infections this past week, I decided to try out this service, just to make sure that nothing has gotten through... I would like to report that I have tried HouseCall, and it found 11 viruses on my PC, some that had been resident since 1998! Most of them were harmless, but it did find some serious ones. This seems to be a safe, convenient, and free means of keeping your PC clean. It does not replace having one of the Anti-Virus software packages as they check files as you receive them. But you have to keep their signatures up to date so you are being protected from the latest infections. john.
Thanks for this post...I ran the program and was very pleased to see I have no viruses on my system! However, I was under the impression that the rootsweb lists are set up so viruses cannot be transferred via them. Joan, You are correct (usually). However, many of us do send private email and that is where is the real problem comes up. I said usually because some nasty virus can get spread indirectly "through" the list. Some of them look in your mail and send the viruses off to everyone you have received mail from. Even if the receipt was through a list. However, I am only familiar with this behavior when it hits someone using Outlook or Outlook Express. john.
