John Lisle Thank you so much for the "leads" on where to go and what to do next. It's the kindness of strangers like you that keeps us novices going. I am writing Lawrence Co, OH for copy of his death certificate, and hopefully a marriage certificate to Permelia. Thank you, thank you Florence in Ohio
Florence, I believe that you will want to write the clerk of the Probate Court for Lawrence County. Lawrence County Courthouse Fifth and Park Avenue P.O. Box 208 Ironton, OH 45638 740-533-4355 Also, you might wish to explore the Lawrence Co. GenWeb page as there might be more info there: http://www.scioto.org/Lawrence/ I found this on the site which is from an 1880ish county history: "Avery Painter Davidson, farmer, is the youngest son of Simon and Arcadia (Sharp) Davidson. His father was born, reared and married in Delaware, and was a soldier in the war of 1812. In 1830, he came to Belmont County OH, and two years later removed to Monroe County, where our subject was born 12 Jul 1834. His wife died at the age of thirty-four years. He is still living in Gallia County OH, in his eighty-fourth year. On arriving at manhood, our subject settled in Noble County OH, where he followed farming till 1856, after which he spent three years in the West, when he returned to Noble County. He spent the following year in Kansas. and returning to Ohio purchased a farm in Gallia County. At the end of a year, he sold his farm and bought one in Lawrence County, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits till 1877, when he sold his farm and bought the one where he now resides, near Latham, in Pike County. He was married 18 May 1861 to Eveline, daughter of Jeptha and Lucy (Carn) Massie, of Lawrence County. They have had seven children: Lucy A., Sarah B., Mary E., Odelle, Laura and Stella M., and Elaseo, who died in infancy. Mr. Davidson belongs to Stafford Lodge, No. 300, F. & A. M., Stafford, Monroe County OH." I suspect that this is a brother to your William. Please note that he was born in Delaware and that the mother's maiden name was Sharp. You might wish to contact the Gallia Co. Probate Court for a will or estate administration papers for this Simon Davidson - assume he died in period 1880-1900. Here are some more tidbits: DAVIDSON, MRS. PERMELIA: IET JUL. 19, 1937 Mrs. Permelia Davidson, 84, died Sunday at her home in La Grange, following 60 years residence there. She was born in 1853 at Gallipolis. Mrs. Davidson leaves four sons and three daughters, George, Samuel, Frank and William Davidson, all of Ironton; Mrs. Nettie Pemberton of Ashland, Mrs. Mary Hoptry of Ironton. Two daughters preceded her in death a few years ago. Her husband, William R. S. Davidson, a Civil War Veteran preceded her in death 33 years ago.
