    1. Re: [DAVIDSON-L] John Davidson - War of Independence
    2. I will try to answer some of the questions I have received about my ggggrandfather -- who was one of the John Davidsons in the War of Independence. To begin with -- his father was, also, named John. The senior John was born about 1728 and died about 1801. I do not know where he was born. I have heard that he, too, served in the war -- but cannot prove it. He was married to Tabitha (maiden name unknown.) John and Tabitha Davidson lived in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. They had eight children -- some born in each of the two states. They were: 1. James (no information on him) 2. Joseph (all the information I have on him is that he married a Mary Park. I have had a lot of questions about Joseph and am sorry to say I have nothing else on him. I know that a Joseph lived near my John in Jasper County, Ga. Also, that this Joseph received a pension for fighting in the Revolution. However, I have not found anything that proves that the "Jasper County Joseph" is my John's brother) 3. Jean (1750 - 1829) married James Park, son of George and Margaret Park. 4. John (1761-1856) Revolutionary Soldier - Wife's name is unknown. They had six children. (see below) 5. Elizabeth (1761 - 1835) married John Leeper. They are buried in Smith Cemetery, south of Belmont, North Carolina. 6. Mary (called Polly) (1771 - 1844) married Gilbert Shaw, a Revolutionary Soldier. They moved from South Carolina to Jasper County, Georgia. Gilbert was killed by a tornado. I only know one child's name -- her name was Tabitha Shaw. I believe they had other children. 7. Samuel Davidson - (1774 - 1834) moved from SC to Mount Zion, Illinois somewhere between 1812 and 1817. He marred Elizabeth Mayes - daughter of Andrew Mayes and Mary Rutherford. 8. William Davidson - (1776 - 1837) moved from SC to Mount Zion, Illinois with his brother, William. He married Elizabeth Mayes - same named cousin of Samuel's wife. Her parents were Thomas Mayes and Jean Rutherford. Now for my John, RS. According to his pension record, he was born 1761, on the Schuylkill River -- near Philadelphia. (Records show he or his family had land in what is now Fairmont Park in Philadelphia.) His family moved from Pennsylvania to South Carolina when he was a young child. He was only 16 years old when he enlisted in Union District, SC -- August, 1777. He was a private, serving under Capt. Robert Faris, Col. Brandon, and Capt. Robert Montgomery. John fought in several battles and was wounded at the battle of Cowpens. After the war he moved to Georgia. He died January 15, 1856 in Jasper County, Georgia -- at 95 years old. I do not know if this is a clue -- but his estate shows that he had an unusually large number of books that were religious or philosophical. I do not have his wife's name, but they had six children. They were: 1.Mary b August 6, 1792. married Samuel Smith 2.Robert 1798 - 1847 married Elizabeth Mitchell 3.Margarette 1801 - 1880 married Drury S. Patterson. 4.Jane 1803 - 1840 married Moses Chaffin 5.David 1808 - 1884. He married Susan Caroline (Carrie) last name unknown. David was my gggrandfather. He and Carrie had 10 children. I believe most of them were raised in Troup County, Georgia (near Alabama/Georgia state line.) Some moved to Chambers County, Alabama. 6.John Davidson, Jr. 1812 - 1892. married Elizabeth P. McKee. If any thing in the above information looks like a fit, I would love to hear from you. It has been a long time since I have found a new piece to this puzzle. I guess I had beginners luck for the first couple of years -- but have come to a real stand still. Anna Gayle DAVIDSON McClure
