Yes, you should get his military records, which will show not only information about him -- and where he collected a pension, if any, but also the pension applications show such things as names of his parents, wife, children, dates of their birth, etc., so you can tell for sure whether this Zack is "your Zack". I've filled out quite a few (some years back) of these requests for military records, and I got them from one of the (9, I think) National Archives centers.
