He had a brother George who lived in PA and himself moved to NC early in 1750s and who was the father of Gen. William Lee Davidson. Samuel does seem to be a close relative as his sons, James and Benjamin, were with John's family in NC, but I have seen no evidence to show how close they may have been. There is some evidence to suggest that Samuel was a son of another Samuel. BTW, if Scottish naming patterns hold - and indications are that the Davidsons did follow them - then the name of John and George's father was George as the first known son for each was named George. James did marry Mary McConnell whose sister Margaret married John's son William. Both families removed to Buncombe county. The McConnell family arrived in NC in the 1750s so it is not likely that they were in Augusta, VA in 1766. The only known child that they had was a daughter Martha Davidson who married a cousin John Davidson who was a son of William Davidson and Margaret McConnell. john.
