Hi, It is amazing how difficult it is to sort out these Davidsons. They all seem to have the same names and the various families are confused all of the time. (1) There was a John Davidson and his wife Jane who married a William Morrison after he died about 1749 in what is now Iredell County, NC. He had a brother George who was the father of Gen. Wm. Lee Davidson. He had twin sons Samuel and William who lived in Buncombe County. (2) There was a John Davidson who came to Mecklenburg county about 1750. He married Violet Wilson, daughter of Samuel Wilson. He lived until about 1830. He was one of the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration in 1775. (3) There was at least one other John Davidson in Mecklenburg at this time frame. I have not researched this family extensively, but there is no evidence that he was related to the other Davidsons. I do not know what the proof is that his wife was a Morrison. (4) I thought that there was another John Davidson who survived through the 1790 census and is recorded there. I do not know his family either. There was at least one other Davidson family in the area at this time. Any attempt to sort out Davidsons from this area has the problem of first reviewing the latest research on the known families and seeing if your data fits in with that story. If it does not, you need to see if it corresponds to the known erroneous stories. If it does not, then we may have new data to add to our knowledge base. john.
