    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.davidson/4533.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Unfortunately, the professional researcher reported to me that the original marriage bonds for that time period were destroyed, and all that is available are transcriptions that were made many years "after the fact." It is one of those transcribed records that shows "Jonah." I remain rather confident, however, that this should actually have been "Josiah" Davidson (and I remain confident that this was the same Josiah Davidson who was on the 1850 Fulton Co., KY census). The other Josiah Davidson who married Suky Hughes was very PROBABLY a son of the John Davidson who moved to Smith/Wilson Co., TN shortly after he had appeared on the 1810 Buckingham Co., VA census. I believe that this was actually John Benning Davidson, a son of Charles Davidson and his unknown wife, and a grandson of Edward Davidson (whose wife at his death around 1794 was Agnes Mosby...she may or may not, however, have been the mother of Charles Davidson). Edward Davidson left Buckingham and moved to Bedford/Campbell Co., VA by about 1780, but his son Charles stayed behind in Buckingham, until Charles moved to "next-door" Cumberland Co., VA (he apparently worked as an overseer for the wealthy George Carrington family/estate there, since Charles' tax was paid one year by the Carrington estate in the late-1780s). It appears that Charles Davidson was dead before the 1810 VA census was issued, and it looks like his son John Benning Davidson obtained land back in Buckingham Co., VA in the 1790s. It seems certain that John Benning Davidson and his unknown wife (wives?) had a son named Micajah Davidson (born about 1808....a descendant gave me a record of Micajah's life that states that Micajah was born in Buckingham Co., VA in 1808 and then his parents moved to Smith Co., TN around 1810). It seems that they also had a son named John Davidson "Junior" (probably the oldest son), and it would make sense if they also had another son named Josiah Davidson, since that given name was used at least THREE other times in this overall Davidson family. As I recall, the 1810 Buckingham census showed John Davidson with four apparent sons, all under the age of 10, as well as one apparent son who was a teenager (probably John Davidson "Junior"), plus two apparent daughters and an apparent wife. As I recall, a John Davidson and a younger John Davidson can both be found on the 1820 Wilson Co., TN census, and the total number of people in those two households combined was about equal to the total number of people who were in the single household of the older John Davidson in Buckingham in 1810. The bottom line is: the more I look, the more likely it seems that the Josiah Davidson who married Suky Hughes was out of the "Buckingam Davidsons" (Family 10 on the DNA website) versus out of the "Prince Edward Co., VA Davi(d)sons" (Family 5 on the DNA website). There had also been a marriage back in the 1760s or 1770s between a William Davidson of Buckingham/Family 10 and a Martha Baker who lived in Prince Edward Co., VA (PECo). As such, there was already some "history" of a "Buckingham/Family 10 Davidson" marrying someone from PECo. Comments/questions? The photo will not be displayed on this list, but you can mention it and the gateway message link will get the reader to the message board to see the photo. Does this help? john. 3. What happen to the 10th unmatched Davidson.... anyone see were he got placed?     Thanks Dennis     --- On Wed, 6/25/08, AnnaG1938@aol.com <AnnaG1938@aol.com> wrote: From: AnnaG1938@aol.com <AnnaG1938@aol.com> Subject: Re: [DAVIDSON] Davidson DNA family 3 To: davidson@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, June 25, 2008, 1:49 AM John, Dennis and others, Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our DNA question online. It helped me a lot and maybe your explanations will help other Davidson researchers. I will be going for the 67 markers, now that I understand it better. Good luck to all and, hopefully, more Davidson men will participate in the Davidson DNA project. In the meantime, I hope Family # 3 (yellow) will start some emails between our "clan" members off-list. You can email me at _AnnaG1938@aol.com_ (mailto:AnnaG1938@aol.com) . Let's work on this together. Anna Gayle **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. 3. Karen, You should not be too concerned about how many markers are different, since some markers are "more important" than other markers, from the standpoint of determining if two or more people are "related." Some markers naturally mutate much more often/easily then others do. What all donors should do is run the "report" (calculation) that is available on the Y matches screen within the FTDNA website (after logging-on to that website with the appropriate password and kit number). This report can be run to compare you to any other closely matching donor. Sans any other information, we typically look for around 80% (or higher) "odds" of the two people sharing a common ancestor at 12 "generations back" and around 90% (or higher) "odds" at 16 "generations back," before we combine two or more people into a single "numbered family" on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson website. This report/calculation is based on a proprietary algorithm that the experts at FTDNA have developed, and it takes into account the "importance" of any markers that are different between the two donors being compared. The more markers the two donors being compared have done, the more reliable/accurate the results from this report will be. As an example, my only closely matching Davidson donor at the 37 marker level is a 36/37 "match" to me. When I run the above report/calculation to compare that donor to me, it shows that the odds of us sharing a common male Davidson ancestor at the 16 "generations back" time period is over 99% (so that one marker that is different between us is obviously not one of the "real important ones"...i.e., it is apparently a marker that tends to mutate "frequently"....relatively speaking). DNA never shows 100% "odds" (just the way that the "science" works), so 99+% is "as good as it gets." Bill Davidson

    3. Fran, Unless someone that you closely match at your current "level" of markers has also done 67 markers (or will do so in the future), then upgrading from 37 to 67 will not do much good (you need another "67 marker donor" to whom your results can be compared....but somebody has to "go first"). In general, the more markers people do, the more definitive and accurate the interpretation of the results will be (and we have learned that doing just 12 markers is only reliable to prove that you are NOT related to another donor.....we have had several perfect 12/12 matches that "fell apart" at the 25, 37 and/or 67 "marker levels"). We have a situation where two families (4 and 4A) on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website are a fairly close match at 37 (or less) markers, and we believed that, if the donors would upgrade to 67 markers, then we could determine once and for all if these two families were really just one big single family (with a common male ancestor among all of them in some "genealogically significant" timeframe....like about 500-700 years or less). Several people within these two families recently requested upgrades to 67 markers (at our suggestion), so we will see what the results are in 5-7 weeks or so. In general, however, doing 37 markers has proven to be perfectly adequate (with 12 definitely not being adequate, and with 25 markers being "marginal"). Note: If two people KNOW from family history and/or definitive documentation that they share a common ggg-grandfather (for example), and if these two people are taking the DNA test just "for the fun of it," then doing just 25 markers is probably fine. Such people (if they TRULY do share that common ancestor) will typically be a 25/25 match, or maybe a 24/25 "match," and that "level" of testing should be adequate to prove what they already knew. If, however, two people are a 25/25 match, yet they have no idea whatsoever how/why they seem to be related, upgrading to at least 37 markers is a good idea, since we have seen perfect 25/25 matches degrade to a 32/37 "matches" (for example).....which is typically not a good match (hence, such two people probably do not share a common ancestor within any "genealogically significant" timeframe after all). Remember, if you believe in Adam and Eve (i.e., that we all came from two "original people"), then we are ALL "blood related." It is just a matter of "how far back is too far" for DNA to accurately "connect you" to another person, using the Y chromosome test. By the way, I highly recommend that everyone in the Davidson/Davison/Davisson project have their "user preference" on the FTDNA website set such that ALL surname matches are shown in the "Y matches section" therein, not just the matches within only the Davidson/Davison/Davisson project. People may have matches to other surnames (due to adoptions, name changes, "affairs," etc.). This has proven to be much more common than most of us would probably have imagined (before DNA testing came along). Due to privacy reasons (per input from FTDNA), however, even if you set YOUR "user preference" to "show me all of my matches, irrespective of surname," unless the "matching donors" with other surnames (if any) have also set their OWN preferences to "show all," then you will still not see them. I discovered that my maternal Brown family was actually a Smith family.....but I was able to determine that from the FTDNA website, only because both the Smith donor AND the Brown donor each had his own "user preference" set to "show all." Of course, everyone should also enter their results on the separate/stand-alone/"universal" Y Search DNA website (as FTDNA always recommends to their donors). Unfortunately, however, many people have not placed their results there, so that resource is not as complete as it could be (that website lets you find all of your matches/close matches, irrespective of surname). Bill
