The Josiah Davidson in Smith Co., TN (born about 1802) married Susannah "Suky" Hughes of Prince Edward Co., VA, and they were eventually in Crittenden Co., KY. We rececently had a descendant of this Josiah Davidson join the DNA testing project, and he matched "Family 7" on the DNA website. The Josiah Davidsons in Rutherford and Hickman Co., TN were part of my "Family 10." The Josiah Davidson in Henry Co., TN MIGHT have been part of "Family 5," since the family of his wife Elizabeth Throckmorton/Throgmorton was in the same part of NC where several of the "Family 5 Davidson" migrated when they left Prince Edward Co., VA (PECo). Also, one PECo tax record in the late-1700s shows that there had been an earlier Josiah Davidson in "Family 5," though we can only guess at who his father was. I don't think that Ruth or anyone else has indentified those George Davidsons in Dickson that you mentioned. There was a Jesse Davidson who was in Lawrence Co., TN in 1830. There was also a younger Jesse Davidson in Lewis Co., TN in 1850 (age 32). I think that this second/younger Jesse Davidson was probably part of my "Family 10," but I am less sure about the older Jesse. Author: robingarland25 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.davidson/4833.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Bill, Yes, I've exchanged extensively with Ruth. And I do agree that Sarah Davidson, widow of Thomas, does "appear" likely connected in the way proposed based on a Sarah mentioned in the settlement of estate of Joseph Davidson of Dickson County. However, I note that several trees for Joseph list this Sarah as a daughter not a daughter-in-law. But I still have many questions/comments. As for Dickson County itself: 1) With this newer discovery of Jesse Davidson in Pope County (in that I have never seen anyone else discuss him other than to list his name among Sarah's heirs), is some evidence to suggest that he was born at least 5-10 years earlier than all other reports I have seen for him. Further, his son's death certificate suggests he is present on the 1830 Dickson census along with at least 1-2 males born by this time. It would seem than unlikely that he is one of the males present in Sarah's HH (which has been previously stated) as she has no younger males listed in her 1830 HH. 2) Given the above, and as I have suspected for some time, it seems more likely that one of the males in her HH is that of son-in-law, John W. Thomas. Considering all the documentation that Sarah Davidson did have a daughter, Delila, and a female of that age is present in the 1830 HH I will suggest the HH members as widow Sarah, sons Howell, James, and Abraham, John Thomas and wife, Delila. 3) Where was Sarah in 1820? I realize she could have lived with relatives as a widow, but if she were in Dickson County and she and children lived with Davidsons then this would be an important bit of information. 4) Viewing some online trees for Abraham Davidson (RW vet) reportedly tied to this family, I am curious about the last listing of family members for him that look curiously close to those of Sarah and her family. Where documentation for all his descendants originate I am uncertain and need help with this. 5) Who were all those Georges on Dickson census? Have they been placed?? 6) What became of Sarah's son Abraham? Obviously from documents he existed, and yes, by 1868 he is noted as away from Dickson County, but where was he prior to this? As for the Pope area of IL: 1) A court document in Pope County in 1842 has a Jesse Davidson, blacksmith, a witness to a case. This court case involved families who lived curiously close to where the Dickson County Jesse landed nearer 1850. Are they the same man? Did Jesse live in the area and return later? 2) Who did Riley Davidson of Pope and surrounding area belong to? Yes, there was a Nancy, but my question is whether there was connection of both Riley and Oliver to this 'other' Davidson family? I do not know where or when the reported marriage to a Nancy Hines took place or the documents to support that...I need help in this regard. 3) The intermarriages with Jesse Davidson's family with Broadways may be simply that the families moved to a common area of IL and became interrelated but it does raise questions in my mind. I think it has also raised questions in the minds of others also as I have seen some suggesting several documented descendants of Jesse's family to that of the group reported as migrating from Stewart County earlier. Did past researchers assume a relationship and use this as supporting evidence to tie the family to the Davidson/Bowman group? 4) I've not been successful in identifying a surviving male Davidson in TN related to the Sarah line. Perhaps highlighting the known relationship of Jesse Davidson to this group could locate someone of the IL line willing to participate in DNA testing. As I have stated previously, I am not a Davidson but a Thomas (by way of John W. Thomas who married Delila Davidson) and I am female so I am not a candidate for such testing. 5) Whether or not there is a direct relationship between the earlier Davidsons in Pope County and the Dickson line it would seem documenting who is who is important (otherwise how does one know who should be tested for which family group?). 6) There are as many or more questions surrounding Davidson men who migrated to the area of Pope and closely surrounding areas (Massac, Johnson, etc.) who came from TN (Henry and Montgomery Counties). I feel that identifying some of the original families will aid Davidson research in TN (considering no one appears to know the origination of the Josiah and William of Henry County, TN I would like to know if some of these men were tied to that group). Finally, who was the wife of Jesse Davidson and where did they marry? It would appear Jesse married before 1825 and possibly in Dickson County. But I have to wonder about an 1842 marriage in Henry County to a Martha Gunter (a possible second marriage). I've seen no one discuss this couple. As far as my research is concerned, I have had to move forward to work backwards to try and discover the actual origins of both my Thomas and Davidson ancestors. Since I am on a roll...has anyone actually examined the pension application of Sarah Davidson, widow of Thomas? Shelley There is a strong possibility that this could be part of my Davidson family. I have a Josiah and Caroline Elizabeth Depriest Davidson. Their son, John Franklin Davidson went to Washington, In 1900 and 1910, he was on the census records in Whitman, Washington. In 1920, he was in Spokane. The note I have indicates he died sometime around 1920 in Spokane. I would be very interested in this photograph as it does have strong possibilities for my family. I'm copying a couple of descendants from Josiah as they would probably know for sure if the photo belongs to "us." This is the same overall Davidson/Davison family that married into the Broadway family on at least three occasions, as I recall. William and Sarah (Bowman) Davidson had a son named John Davidson. The first wife of John is apparently unknown, but some researchers believed that he was the same John Davidson who married Nancy Hines and who lived in Pope Co., IL. John and Nancy (Hines) Davidson had sons who were named Oliver Perry Davidson and Riley Davidson. We have descendants out of Oliver Perry Davidson in the DNA test, and they do NOT match "Family 5" (they match "Family 9" instead, as I recall). As such, it appears that the researchers who thought that the John Davidson who married Nancy Hines was the son of William Davidson and Sarah Bowman of Prince Edward Co.! , VA were incorrect. I believe that you have exchanged information with Ruth Kent, and some of her "Family 4" Davidsons were in Dickson Co., TN. As such, my "pure guess" would be that your Thomas Davidson was probably a member of "Family 4"......but you may need a living male Davidson from your family to join the DNA test to ever prove it, one way or the other. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: robingarland25 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.davidson/4833/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I seek to exchange information with others researching the Davidson families of both TN and IL. I am able to confirm that the Jesse Davidson (wife Martha) present on the 1860 Pope County, IL, born abt 1800, TN is the son of Thomas and Sarah Davidson of Dickson County, TN. Sarah, as a widow of Thomas, is present on the 1830-1860 Dickson County census. Several records related to her pension for Thomas' War of 1812 and estate settlement demonstrate them the parents of: Jesse C or G, abt 1800 Delila, abt 1804 (married John W. Thomas) Howell A, abt 1805 James M, abt 1808 Abraham (suspect abt 1812) I'm still gathering on Sarah and do not locate her in 1820. Was she living with others? Documents demonstrate she was widowed as Thomas was reported to have died in the Battle of New Orleans. I recently received the death record of William Davidson, 1903, son of Jesse Davidson from Pope County, IL records. It reports him as born in "Dixon Co Tenn" and born in 1829. I'd then suspect the Jesse Davidson family to appear on the 1830 census for Dickson County but do not find a Jesse Davidson listed. Was Jesse Davidson also known as George? Sarah's estate demonstrates the heirs of Jesse Davidson to be: Thomas (of Denton TX) and William, Sarah Jane, George and Isabelle Broadway (all of Pope IL). The document recorded in 1868 lists Jesse Davidson as deceased. William, Sarah Jane, George, and Isabelle are easy to track on the Pope census 1860 and after. In William Davidson's death record is reported that he was a resident of Pope County for 55 years. This would bring this Davidson family to that area in 1848. This would appear consistent with the first of land purchases that Jesse Davidson made in that area. Also, William Davidson married in the county in 1850. It would seem that the family should be present here in 1850 yet I do not find them. Were they missed on census? It seems unlikely that Jesse Davidson would miss appearing on every census of his life except for 1860! A record search via IL archives prior to 1850 for the Pope IL area did not reveal more than what I had in land entries beginning in 1848. Prior to Jesse's arrival in Pope other Davidson family are present. They are reported to have come to the area from Stewart TN. They are reported also to originate from the Davidson/Bowman line who had intermarried with Broadway family. If that is true or not I can not say. Interestingly, Isabelle Davidson, daughter of Jesse Davidson married into the Broadway family of Pope County. She was the second with of William Broadway who is said to be son of Royal Broadway who also descends from a Davidson line. As a couple, William and Isabelle Broadway had a son, Riley per census, Royal per online reports, who evidently perished young. William Broadway died during the civil war and Isabelle was widowed and does not appear to have remarried. Later census demonstrate her report of mothering one child and that child deceased. The children of Jesse Davidson remained in Pope County, IL for an extended period appearing to live and farm on lands purchased by both Jesse and William Davidson. Descendants of William Davidson intermarried into the Broadway family several times. William's youngest son, James Howell Davidson, married Mettie Broadway. James Howell Davidson would become a Methodist Minister and the last record found for him is in Albion, Edwards, IL where he and his wife were living in the "parish." William's son, Jesse Thomas Davidson, married Amanda Williams and they had a large family which I suspect may still have descendants in the area. Jesse and Amanda died in the 1940s in Creal Springs, Williamson County, IL where I know several of their children relocated with them. Another son of William's, John W., appears to have perished as a young adult. I believe he was the father of a Benjamin Eugene Davidson who served in the navy, married a woman named Edna and moved to Arkansas. I'd like to hear from anyone with better insight to earlier Davidson family members in Pope IL, the Stewart County documentation that exists, or other information that would help me sort out further information from this area. I have obtained the first of the records for lands obtained by Jesse Davidson in this county. Both were obtained via bounty warrants. The first was for a warrant awarded to a man by the name of James M. Stanphill. I've no idea of a connection to this man. The second was for a warrant awarded to Sarah Davidson (was this Jesse's mother or another Sarah Davidson)? Any insight or information appreciated.
