Does anyone have any info on this Davidson line? Unfortunately, I am a female descendant of a female Davidson, so I do not think that I am able to participate in the DNA project. There were at least three, and may four, separate/unrelated Davidson/Davison families in Botetourt/Rockbridge in the 1700s. These included members of my "Family 10," "Family 12" and "Family 16"...the fourth potential Davidson family line, headed by a John Davidson (he left his will in Rockbridge in 1802 as an old man) and his wife Mary Allison, has no one in the DNA test at this time. "Family 12" was the family that intermarried with the Gilmore family in the Augusta/Botetourt/Rockbridge area on more than one occasion. I don't recall a George Davidson or a Matthew Gilmore, however, in those families. Can you "place" the Matthew Gilmore that you mentioned in the Botetourt/Rockbridge area? And since you have listed the pension number and it matches with what I had posted then we see that we are talking about the same George Davidson. My source looks to actually have copied information from the pension itself where in George is noted to have served out of South Carolina but actually have been born in Albemarle VA. Who then knows where he and wife Elizabeth married on "20 Oct 1784" and where he moved in VA then TN given the timeline of the grant and his service record which extends out until 1780 where "...he was under Lt John Dining (who acted as captain) and Col Kimball" per the account found. The old George seems like he could also be the George Davidson appearing in 1820 Dickson where we also find Joseph, Josiah, and Abraham. For what it is worth, witnesses to this George's will were James and Matthew Gilmore. Matthew Gilmore appears as age 60-70 in 1830. James was born closer to 1805. Online trees list them as father and son. Are you aware of a connection of Davidsons to a Bouterot (?spelling) in VA? Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.davidson/4833.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: When I see Albemarle Co., VA, I think of the William, Samuel and George Davidson (and maybe a couple of other given names in the Davidson family) who appeared on various records there in the mid-late-1700s or so. That George Davidson in Albemarle Co., VA married Mary Woods, and he was SUPPOSEDLY one of the sons of the Samuel Davidson who was first found in the Beverly Manor section of Augusta Co., VA. That Samuel Davidson was a member of "DNA Family 1," and this is the same overall Davidson family as the family of Rev. War hero General William Lee Davidson, after whom the counties in NC and TN were named (ditto the college in NC). It is believed that the Samuel Davidson in Beverly Manor was a brother of "Importation" John Davidson who came to that part of VA from PA. General William Lee Davidson was a son of the George Davidson who was also up in PA, and that George Davidson is the known/proven brother of "Importation" John Davidson. A descendant of the APPARENT brother named Samuel took the DNA test (I think that this DNA donor is out of Samuel's son named Benjamin), and this donor matched "Family 1." This was the first "concrete proof" that this Samuel Davidson in Beverly Manor was at least part of this overall Davidson family.....whether or not he was actually a BROTHER of "Import John" and George). John Lisle, who heads-up the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website, is a descendant of "Family 1," and he has an excellent website on his Davidson family. John Lisle shows the above George Davidson of Albemarle Co., VA as a son of the above Samuel Davidson of Beverly Manor, but if I recall correctly, John Lisle has no actual PROOF that this George Davidson was a son of Samuel Davidson of Beverly Manor, nor that George was even absolutely/positively part of "Family 1" (though that certainly seems likely). You can see this George Davidson of Albemarle Co., VA on John Lisle's website here: http://www.lislefamily.org/davidson/tng/getperson.php?personID=I10502&tree=davidson_main This website shows that George had a son who was also named George, but this also shows that this son named George died young. It could be, however, that one of the BROTHERS of the older George Davidson in Albemarle Co., VA had a son around 1751 in that county who was also named George, and who served in the war (and who lived to old age). As you can see from the above link, these brothers of George were: John, James, Benjamin, JESSE and William (so this family did use "Jesse" as a given name). I just glanced at this briefly on the referenced website, and it appeared that there is little if any information on the children for at least some of these brothers. Comments? I had noted a pension application in the Nashville office for an Elizabeth Davidson, widow of George, which ceased in 1844. I made notes on all the pensions for Davidsons out of that office as this is where Sarah Davidson had made claim as widow of Thomas Davidson. These records do not appear to state which wars those receiving payment were with and I note some appearing more likely RW services, others for 1812 or other. The list includes: Abraham, stop 1838 Elizabeth, widow of George, stop 1844 Elizabeth, widow of William Brown, stop 1860 (notes a transfer from the Pulaski office) James, stop 1856 John, stop 1846 Sarah, widow of Thomas, stop 1868 I had been suspecting that Elizabeth actually collected on RW service for George and note entry of a George Davidson in TN, serving out of SC. Pension noted as collected in Dickson, TN and 82 years of age in 1832. A volume documenting information from RW service out of pension records involving SC included the following entry: DAVIDSON, George (W283) born 1751 Albemarle VA died 4 Sept 1833 married Elizabeth _________ 20 Oct 1784 While residing in Craven (now Lancaster), he enlisted 1775 under Capt Robert Crawford and Col Joseph Kershaw....(documents service up through 1780)...He was in the battles at Rocking Mount, Cowpens, Camden, Eutaw Springs. Moved to VA and TN. The 1830 Dickson County entry for George Davidson includes a male 20-30, a male 70-80, a female 10-15, a female 60-70. Shelly, Have you had a Davidson man take the Davidson DNA test? That could help you identify the family you need. I have many John Davidson's in my ancestors, but I have no reason to think they were in Spokane. In 1890, I believe they were in Georgia and/or Alabama.
