Major William Davidson and his twin brother Samuel Davidson fought for the patriots in North Carolina. Samuel was 1st white settler west of the blue ridge in N.C. Ferguson also raided William Davidson's home while in NC, as he was a well know patriot. C & B Davidson wrote: > I have an Alexander Davison, from Northampton Co., PA who was a private in > the Am. I have researched for years in the various libraries in the Southern States. I think a large number of Davidsons were in SW Virginia, ETN, & WNC. From there they spread all over the US and back. It is amazing to me how mobile they were. One account said those Davidsons were like Maggots in a fire, they were always moving. My family moved from SWVA to WNCand back to ETN and KY before spreading all over US from Coast to Coast. My immediate family were at one time from NJ to CA and south to FL. I am now in TX and others are in TN and CA still.
This is a long shot but have you seen The Patriot starring Mel Gibson. I always wondered why my ancestors marched from southwest Virginia to King's Mtn in South Carolina to fight the Brits. They had been British subjects before settling in the Wilderness but I think the writer portrayed the Angst that existed on the frontier. Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mochigans was also a good example of how the pioneer's risked everything to settle their own land. However, ask the Indians who were displaced by the Colonists and you will get a totally different persective. It was the Time of the Gentiles and it was Manifest Destiny. Do you realize if Brigham Young had not colonized the WEST, American might have had a different shape. Many times the fate of this Nation hung in the balance of a few individuals who made a difference in their world. I fear that standard of living is dying or may already be dead. God Bless America! Phil
I have an Alexander Davison, from Northampton Co., PA who was a private in the Am. Rev. (2 PA Regiment., 2nd Batt.,5th class). Know that several other Alexander's from Pennsylvania also fought in the war. (Beaver, Cumberland, and Allegheny counties, I think). Know that many other Alexander's from MA, VA, and NC and NJ also were in the war on the American side. Although my J. A. Davidson (possibly stands for Jacob Alan) did not fight, he was gunned down in his front yard in Rolla, Missouri by bushwhackers while his children and wife watched. And thatÂ’s about all I know about him. Amy Davidson ********************************************* Don't take life too seriously; you won't get out of it alive." -Hubbard's Law (from Murphy's Laws)
I know this is my line of Davidsons I just can't make the connection. Does this ring any bells? Elizabeth Davidson b.? d. 1846. She married James McCracken b. 1750 d. 1802. They lived in Mecklenburg Co NC in the Long Creek area. They went to the same church as William Davidson (who was killed in RW at Cowan's Ford in Meck Co) which is Hopewell Presbyterian Ch. in Meck Co. James Mc in buried there along with William Davidson. Elizabeth Davidson McCracken and James had a son named William Davidson McCracken. And a son named Elihu. Elihu had a son named William Davidson McCracken who also had a son named William Davidson McNitt (McKnitt) (McKnight) McCracken. McKnight a surname connected with Davidsons in Meck Co. McCrackens also married into the Samples and Alexanders, other prominent surnames in Meck Co with connections to the Davidsons. Family legend says that Elizabeth Davidson was a daughter of Dr. Davidson. The McCrackens lived in the old Davidson house in Meck Co NC. Someone give me some help here. Who was Elizabeth Davidson's father? Regards, Gaye Frady
Yes, this is a moving story, and an example of why I am so fascinated by my fellow Davidson's part in shaping America. I am also interested in discovering similar conflicts within the War of Independence, Davidson's who were loyalist, English settlers, second generation American Davidson's who fought for Independence, conflicts within families etc. Admittedly, this happened with all British/British descendent families, but I would be most interested in hearing specific examples of my own name. Many Thanks.
Hi Folks, Would you check this link on the Rev.War Roster. I does not work for me. Thanks, Chuck
Feel free to post the details to the list as I am also interested in Davidsons from Kansas to California in the late 1800's. Kim _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

The following information is in my notes on my direct ancestor John E. Davidson. I wonder if you have any information in your records that would connect These Gibson and Davidsons. Thank you. William Gibson shows as the second head of household. Since there is no relationship to John E. shown these may be relatives of his wife.?? 1910 Census - William Gibson, age 31, with wife Ethel J. age 31, are living with John E. , their oldest child, age 13..

Joseph Davidson, from Ireland, was in Pennsylvania, then settled in Iredell Co NC. He supplied shoes for the local group organized at Statesville. Two of his sons died at Ramsour's Mill. His son Alexander also fought and moved to Lewisburg TN where there is a RW marker with his name on it. One of Alexander's sons, Joseph, stayed in Iredell Co area. Joseph's son Milas Alexander Davidson moved with his family to 'Davidsons Settlement' near Tuscaloosa Alabama. Later he moved to Pontotoc Co MS where he lived and died. M A was my GG grandfather. Check out the National Park Service Website for the Muster rolls of Valley Forge. There were 19 Davidsons present there - - -on the American side!! http://nps.gov/vafo/home.htm
Well said, Facts are important to us all. We do not need to be looking for misinformation. It wastes time and money trying to verify it. Problems enough with relatives with the same name in the same vicinity. Court records don't always identify which John or William or Samuel. Example I got a note stating that one of my relatives was married to her relative. Turned out they were probably cousins named for the grandmother but had completely different lives. I am looking for Scott Co VA Davidsons(Davison) depending upon the generation. Some of my friends leave the middle d off so if they were recording history, would they be accurate?
