Hi Mary Anne::::::::::I got a "Coffman1" e-mail on 11/27, which was addressed to my personal e-mail address. Had a subject of (Davidson-L)Emma/Arthur/James Davidson, Va>WV, 1850-1900, which was a query that I placed about two years ago, but, without the names 'Emma' and 'Arthur'. My name "Arthur' must have been picked up by the virus program. I omitted the prefix underscore symbol, sent an e-mail to the address, and, it was not returned by the ISP server, but, I have not gotten a response from Coffman1. Please describe your e-mail particulars. Arthur Davidson
Dear Kay, I found that I was not able to access an e-mail address in order to let someone know that their mail was infected. So here is another name: coffman1. This did not have an underline preceding it. My Norton just picked up the virus. Hope this helps someone else. Mary Anne Eskew
I have been using and contributing to our Davidson line for a long time and the people who take care of it and keep adding to it and all who have helped have done a great job. I am proud to be a small part of it and I use it all the time. I hate to see people put it down as not being good. It is not only good but I think it is great. I have great admiration for those who do so much for all of us. THANKS From the bottom of my heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maxine _____________________________ Maxine Reggio 7205 NW 46th. Frank, I replied to you personally about some attachments that you sent me. My message to you bounced back, and I couldn't open the attachments? One seemed to be a MSdos attachement, and the other seemed to be a word processing attachment that was empty. What's up with this? Janet Littlejohn
If you suspect a virus is attached to a message: When the messages come into your mailbox, before you click to open the message: Right click on the message, click "Properties", click the "Details" tab. Read the dialog box that appears and make sure that it does not have any reference to the W32.Badtrans. virus. If it states anything related to W32.Badtrans: hand write the correct email address and compose a courteous message informing the person that the virus has been detected on their message and ask them to virus check their system. Simply deleting the underscore will not prevent the virus from spreading. The underscore is a part of the "worm" that is the virus. If you open the message, you will open the virus, and, you will infect your system and continue the virus with your next message(s) sent out. It is important to COMPLETELY DELETE the message, every part of it, not just the underscore. Most important do not open the message, delete the _ and send out other messages. If your anti-virus is up to date and working properly, and you cannot open the message, the A/V is working correctly and you will not be able to open/read the message because your anti-virus program is working. Please let the sender know in a courteous message to them and ask them to resend the question/information. One more thing. Whether you have Norton or McAffee, make sure that the program is set to scan "incoming mail". I've learned a lot about this virus, and others, in the past couple months. The whole key is to having the incoming mail scanned and deleting the message when the program detects a virus and nicely informing the sender of the problem that was detected by the A/V program. If any of you have any questions and/or comments please write directly to me, ldkd95@skyenet.net and I will try to help you. I sent the original message as a "heads up", not to get into a contest with anyone. Let's get back to finding our families links... and, yes, I will respond to anyone who has questions or comments about getting back to finding family. Kay ldkd95@skyenet.net
Thanks for all the input on the virus. The one I have received so far had "Davidson" as the sender, with subject of "Wilson Humphries". Since these are all names that I am researching, I opened it, then got the little notice from my Norton that it had a virus. This was my first experience, and was glad that it contacted it. Thanks for the info about the underline preceding the link. It's great to know these tips. Kay -- Thanks for the information about the _ (underline). I have been trying to open an e-mail sent to me (vis Davidson list) about a Col. Zack Davidson of Georgia. It came to me as a download -- I checked it for a virus -- it was clear. However, I still cannot open it. This must be the reason. Is the _ (underline) a scam or a mistake? Anna Gayle
Subj: Col Zack Davidson Date: 11/28/2001 9:19:11 PM Mountain Standard Time From: AnnaG1938 To: _ftfrank@softcom.net I received your e-mail concerning Col. Zack Davidson, but for some reason it will not open once I download it. Will you please send me an explanation of your connection to Col. Zack Davidson of Georgia, until I can find a way to read your previous e-mail. I am very pleased to hear from anyone that may know of a Col. Zack Davidson of Georgia. I would really appreciate you contacting me, again. Thanks, Anna Gayle Davidson McClure
The underline is the method the person who spreads the virus uses to make sure a mesage bounces if you try to reply to it. To reply, go to REPLY, then remove the _ and send the message. It will go to the person in the Email address. Sometimes they don`t know that they even have a virus. Colleen Kitch GuyCol@webtv.net

Our Norton is new and did pick up the virus after I realized the email was not protected and then checked the appropriate box to scan the email. That is how I found so many little worms. Norton works. I wrote to Mary and asked her to check her computer and the list server. She did that and cleaned both up, it should be fine now.
