    3. Hi Anna I have confirmed my John E. Davidson sometimes used the middle name of Edward but most of the time his name was simply John Davidson. He was born about 1820 somewhere in GA and married his first time in 1856 to Martha Elizabeth Abney. After he returned to Columbus, GA following the civil war he took his family to Marshall County, AL where he was widowed twice and married for a third time. He only had children by his first wife. He died on Grants Mountain in Marshall County, AL about 1918 according to his oldest grand daughter. I found no death certificate and no newspaper obituary about his death. He did not apply for a confederate pension while he was in Alabama nor did his widow. This makes it rather strange for when folks were entitled they usually applied. His son's father in law who lived in the same community applied for pension for his service in the civil war. I have been searching for many years to make a provable connection in this line so now I am going to see if the DNA project will shed some light on his lineage. Alvie L. 2. Dave -- it is better than my cousin -- it is my brother who will be taking the DNA test. He (of course) is another John Elmo Davidson. As I said in my note -- the only thing I am 100% sure about anymore is that John Davidson (Revolutionary Soldier) was my great great great grandfather and he was born in 1760 or 1761 in Pennsylvania - on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia. I will go backwards for you starting with my father and then my grandfathers. I am sure of each of these -- and their children. I will feel better about the first John Davidson -- when I find documents to prove he was my gggggrandfather. My focus has been filling in the name of some of the wives. I am not sure this will ever happen. Their maiden names seems to vanish in thin air, once they get married. Zack Chambliss Davidson -- my father David Elmo Davidson -- grandfather William R. Davidson -- great grandfather David Davidson -- great great grandfather John Davidson -- great great great grandfather -- born in Pennsylvania John Davidson -- great great great great grandfather -- (Have been told by books and other researchers -- do not have proof in my hands.)

    2. Alvie, We have talked before. What do you have about your John E. Davidson's military record? Do you have anything new about him? I have a great uncle or great great uncle who is missing. He was really Zack or Zack E. Davidson. However, he used the name John E. Davidson. That is all I know about him. Although he was an officer in some war. I suppose it must have been the Spanish - American war, because he was too young for the Civil War. I am the sister of John Davidson of Florida. John does not have access to the computer -- but I am sending a kit to him for DNA. Would you update me on what you do know about your John E. Davidson. In the past, years did not match -- but I need to review it again. Thanks, Anna Gayle DAVIDSON McClure

    1. Re: [DAVIDSON] Re: Daniel Davidson and Sarah Jane Duff
    2. Bill Davidson
    3. Mary Pielemeier, I know that you have been trying to determine the parents of "your" Daniel Davidson for some time. It seems that all of the "other" Daniels from VA married someone other than a Mary Enochs. There was a Daniel Davidson who was born in VA for whom I have seen no further info. I thought that I would pass this on, just in case it could be "your" Daniel. There were two father/son pairs of John Davidsons in Augusta Co., VA in the mid-1700s. One of the two fathers named John is known to have been the son of Robert Davidson (born in the 1600s) and his wife Ann (some believe that she was Ann Dunlap, but no proof). That John (died in 1762) was married to an Elizabeth (probably Elizabeth Houston or Elizabeth Maben; died in the early 1800s), and they had several children, including another John Davidson (born 1757) who married Mary Thompson in 1787 in Rockbridge Co., VA. Note: The above Robert and Ann Davidson had a daughter named Margaret/Mary who married a Houston, and General Sam Houston of "Texas fame" came from them. The other of the two fathers named John apparently married Mary Allison, a daughter of Robert Allison. They had a son who was also named John Davidson, and he appears to have married Sarah Rootes. It is unclear how/if this Davidson family was related to the above Robert Davidson family that was also in Augusta Co., VA. The John Davidson who apparently married Sarah Rootes had several children, and his 1798 Augusta Co., VA will lists them. One of the sons listed was Daniel Davidson, and other than this will, I have never seen one other thing about him. Daniel's siblings were John (yet another one), Agnes (married a Daugherty), Elizabeth (married a Tankersley), Margaret (also married a Tankersley), Sarah (married Shaw) and Mary. It appears that the oldest John Davidson in this family (who apparently married Mary Allison) lived until 1802, and a John Davidson who was married to a Mary left a will then. It mentioned daughters Jinny Davidson (who, coincidentally, married ! a William Davidson from yet a third Davidson family), Robert Davidson (who married a Sarah "Sally" Davidson who was the apparent sister of the referenced William Davidson) and Sarah "Sally" (Davidson) Gilmore (wife of James Gilmore, as I recall). There was also an Agnes Davidson who had married a Richard Shanklin (Richard died in Botetourt Co., VA in 1800, and Agnes was mentioned in Richard's will). It strongly appears that Agnes was from this same Davidson family, and she might have been a sister or even an older daughter of the John Davidson who married Mary Allison (note: if she was John's daughter, however, Agnes was not mentioned in his above-referenced 1802 will). Finally, there was a John Thompson who married a Martha Davidson, and they had a daughter named Elizabeth Thompson who married an Arbuckle in Augusta Co., VA in the mid-1700s. This John Thompson appears to have been the son of Mathew Thompson, Senior (died 1753 in Augusta Co., VA), and John Thompson's siblings appear to have been Mathew Thompson, Junior, William Thompson, Margaret Thompson and James Thompson (probably the oldest sibling). Like the Agnes Davidson who married Richard Shanklin, this Martha Davidson was probably from one of the above two Davidson families. As stated above, it is currently unclear if the two Davidson families were actually just "one big family." It could be that the above-mentioned Robert Davidson had an unknown brother (and/or a sister), but there does not seem to be any proof of that at this time. Anyway, the above Daniel Davidson has not been "researched," as far as I can tell. Could he possibly be "yours?" Best regards, Bill Davidson

Samuel Hughes Davidson born 13 Nov 1813 Erie Co., PA son of Fleming Davidson born 1763 Bucks Co., PA son of William Davidson born 25 December 1725 Chester Co., PA William is alleged to be the son of Patrick Davidson, but no documented proof to my knowledge. Patrick born in Ireland 1693/95 died in 1754 in Cumberland County PA. There are so many Samuels, Williams, Johns, James, etc., who knows how it will all link together. Remember hearing the story of the seven brothers who came from Ireland, which I am sure was family folklore. There is no way I can really take advantage of the DNA at this point, my great grandmother was a Davidson from Indiana. Hope the above will help some Davidson researcher. Lois W

    3. Bryan, Henry Newton didn't have a middle name, it was just Henry. He had a son Henry Meridith Newton, this may be where you are getting this confused. Henry and Nancy would have married ca 1802, the time period of 1795 would be a little early for their marriage. The oldest child was born in 1803. 3. Good morning John I have been watching the discussion about DNA and have been a bit reluctant to get into this part of genealogical research. My line has hit a dead end in a time frame just before 1850 when my great grandfather, John E. Davidson, was born somewhere in Georgia. Based upon his information on various records such as census and military records he was born about 1820 in GA and both parents were born in GA. He married his first wife (my great grandmother) in Columbus, GA in 1856 and died in Marshall County, AL about 1918. He married twice again but never had more children. I have located family members of all of his children scattered about the country and have been researching this line for about 30 years with no success of getting anything to yield names or identities of John's parents. I am hoping DNA (59 markers) might give me some direction as to which Davidson line I am descended from. I am going to contact a paternal second cousin (descends from John from another son other than mine) and we will submit a DNA sample and see what we get as results. Alvie L. 1. Davidson Pennsylvania Ancestors
    2. Dave -- It is a good idea about listing Pennsylvania Davidsons. My earliest known Pennsylvania Davidson was John Davidson. JOHN DAVIDSON John Davidson was born about 1728. I do not know if he was born in what became America or if he was born in Scotland. Recently, I heard he had been in England, before coming over here. I believe he married someone by the name of Tabitha, but I have no documentation to prove this. He died about 1801. John had eight children. There could be two wives, because you will see that after the birth of Elizabeth, there is a ten year time frame with no children. John Davidson's eight children are: : James -- no information at all. Jean -- married James Park -- both buried in Smith Cemetery, South of Bel mont, N. C. Joseph -- married Mary (Polly) Park John -- born 1761 in Pennsylvania and died 1856 in Jasper County, GA (This is my direct ancestor) Elizabeth -- born 1761 -- married John Leeper -- both buried in Smith Cemetery, South of Belmont, N. C. Mary -- born 1771 married Gilbert Shaw -- probably buried in Georgia -- Gilbert was Revolutionary Soldier -- killed by a tornado in Georgia Samuel born 1774 -- married Elizabeth Mayes -- moved from South Carolina to IL -- both buried in Mount Zion, IL William born 1776 -- married Elizabeth Mayes (Samuel and William married cousins with the same names) -- both buried in Mount Zion, IL JOHN DAVIDSON -- son of above John Davidson. According to the answers this John Davidson gave to the Pension office Department of War - John was born in 1761 in Pennsylvania - on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia. He was called to service (enlisted at 16) while living in Union District, South Carolina. He was in numerous engagements and was wounded in the head and right hand by a sword in the Battle at Cowpens. After the war, he resided in Union District, South Carolina - then in Green County, Georgia - and then Morgan County, Georgia - and then Jasper County, Georgia. John Davidson, R. S. and his wife (unknown) had six children. He died in Jasper County, GA in 1856 at 95 years old. In a newspaper article about John Davidson's death, Rev. Talmage who was then the president of Oglethorpe University in Georgia, said "He was born in Pennsylvania of Scotch-Irish parentage." Another documentation with a Pennsylvania connection is from a letter in some Davidson material. A letter with "The Oaks" on the letter head was written by Benjamin M. Davidson, John Davidson's grandson. It said in cursive writing that "John Davidson died 1856, age 95, born on the banks of the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia in 1760. He fought for independence and was wounded and drew a pension. He once held a deed to the land on which the Conventional Exposition building stood in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia. He lived in Morgan, Green, and Jasper Counties." I am 100% positive about John Davidson (1761 - 1856) being my ancestor. Also, I do have documentation that John called Mary Davidson Shaw his sister. Everything else is from the book "Leaves of the Tree", records from other "cousins" and family members, church records and some research in Mount Zion, IL at the Presbyterian Church. This is why I am eager to have my brother, John Davidson, do the DNA test. In a message dated 5/7/2006 6:10:14 A.M.
