If I have the "correct" John Davidson, then he was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth (probably Elizabeth Steele) Davidson. Alexander Davidson was apparently in Albemarle Co., VA in the 1750s (the part that became Buckingham Co., VA in 1761), and he then moved to Bedford Co., VA in the 1770s (the part that became Campbell Co., VA in 1782). I do not know where Alexander Davidson was before Albemarle Co., VA (PA, maybe...I have not been able to "connect" him to any of the other VA families in the early-mid 1700s)? I note that there was also a Jane Davidson who married William Ruddle in Bourbon Co., KY on 1 Nov 1796. Alexander Davidson's will around 1800 mentioned a daughter named Jean, but I don't know if that could have been the above Jane who married in KY in 1796. Do have any idea about the family of the above Jane Davidson? Thanks!

    2. Hi Bill and Annette, This is a strange turn of events, My John E. Davidson was from GA and moved to Marshall County, AL about 1870. His son married a Rosa Law. Rosa's aunt married a Michael Ditto in Kennemer's Cove, Marshall County, AL. Michael Ditto was the administrator of his father in law's estate in Marshall County, AL. I dont know anything about the Ditto family except they owned a piece of property on the TN River called "Ditto's Landing" which was a ferrying point across the river to the south part of Marshall County. I believe that this family in Henry/Patrick/Stokes/Grainger came from the Davidsons who were previously in Goochland Co., VA in 1746 and Buckingham Co., VA in 1764 (per tithe lists). 3. Amy, Yes....A branch of the Davidson family out of Goochland (1740s), Cumberland (1749-1759), Albemarle (1759-1761) and then Buckingham (1761 and beyond) moved to Henry Co., VA, with some members of that branch moving to Stokes Co., NC (across the state line). The 1790 census for Stokes shows a David, John and Richard Davi(d)son there, as I recall, and in 1795, David Davidson's daughter Levinia Davidson married a William Willis up in Patrick Co., VA (which had been created from Henry Co., VA in 1791 or so). Goulder Davidson from this family (married a Sarah Unknown; Goulder was APPARENTLY a brother of David, Richard, John and a William Davidson, Junior) in Henry and later Patrick Co., VA moved to Grainger Co., TN by 1804/1805, and he had a known son named Joshua Davidson (who married Elizabeth Sharp). Goulder and Joshua (and maybe others in the family) moved to Alabama by about 1818. I do not know, however, if "your" Jacob Davidson in Grainger was DEFINITELY part of the this overall Davidson family, as I do not know if ALL of the Davidsons in Grainger at that time were related. 3. Alvie, For clarity, we should acknowledge that your DNA matches that of the Davi(d)sons who were in Middlesex Co., VA and then Essex Co., VA in the late 1600s-early 1700s, and who were then in Spotsylvania/Orange Co., VA in the 1720s (and the John Davison/Ann Sons (Soanes?) branch was later in Amelia/Prince Edward Co., VA by the 1740s). I still SUSPECT that your branch of this family was out of these Davi(d)sons who were still in Culpeper Co., VA after it was created from Orange Co., VA. As you know, the Abney family (that eventually married into your Davidson family down in Alabama) was also in the Spotsylvania/Orange area in the early 1700s. Maybe we can eventually prove it, one way or the other. Bill Davidson

The Davidson land in Henry became part of Patrick Co., VA about 1791. Some members of this particular branch of this Davidson family lived just across the state line in Stokes Co., NC by the 1780s, and several members of this family eventually moved to Grainger Co., TN. Note: The above William Davidson had apparent brothers named Edward Davidson and David Davidson. Edward died in Campbell Co., VA around 1794 and David died in Buckingham Co., VA by 1798. William Davidson had a son with the unusual name of Goulder Davidson (sometimes shown as Golder or Golden). Goulder was named, no doubt, because his father William Davidson had apparently married a Hix women (and Goulder was a name used in that Hix family....the Davidson and Hix families were on the 1746 tithe list in Goochland Co., VA). Goulder Davidson and some of his friends and relatives eventually moved to the Morgan, Madison and Marshall Co., AL area. The above Davidson family has been traced with some certainty back to a David and/or William Davidson, who both died in James City Co., VA (JCCo) in 1687. The David Davidson in JCCo left naturalization papers there that show that he was born in Holland. I SUSPECT that I am also related to this family, but research on that continues.
