    1. [DAVIDSON] John Davidson/Susannah Jackson family

    3. So glad to see an interest in John Davidson who married Susanah Jackson. I have some info. regarding them as they can be found in not only Washington Co., Ky records but also in Fayette and Jessamine county Ky records. Study your map of Kentucky and see how the counties broke down. Jessamine came from Fayette, one of the original 3 counties. John might have been the son of Richard Davidson who died and whose widow Mary, came with her 2-3 sons to Fayette county. Later they moved again, still staying in Ky. Wish I could tell you more however, my computer is down and in the shop and I am answering my mail from the public library, so was not prepared to pull files regarding this John who married Susannah Jackson. In about another week, I will have my computer home and can really dig into this. In the meantime, there is a George Davidson in Jessamine county who was living next to and buying land with Jacob Hunter, Sr. His wife was Mrs. Mary Hunter Holloway, widow of Nathan Holloway. The division of his land with all children listed is on file at the Jessamine County Ky. courthouse. Date about 1815. Also this same George is listed earlier in Lincoln county where a land survery ran through his garden. Can't seem to find anything regarding the parents of George Davidson or Daniel Davidson who were closely connected and had children who entermarried in Sullivan Co., Indiana. John Davidson also witnessed a land transaction of George Davidson. Then John left Washington county and I can't remember where he went to, but think it could have been Madison or even Logan county? The part that is interesting to me is my maiden name was Davidson and Susannah Jackson was the name of my gr.gr.gr. grandmother from Washington county, Ky. Her husband John Jackson, was my gr.gr.gr.grandfather. John's parents were William Jackson and Ann Thomas, daughter of Thomas Thomas. He is a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia and I have him in the D.A.R. records. Now I am wondering if Susannah remarried after husband John Jackson died. Could this Susannah Jackson be a widow? Too much coincidence here not to have an element of truth! O.K. Genies lets figure all of this out. When I get my computer back from the shop I will send copies of what I have that is documented. 2. In a message dated 10/2/2006 11:41:05 A.M. Mountain Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Was your John Davidson who was born in 1721 the same John Davidson who was married to Tabitha (maybe Tabitha Porter)? If so, a person whose DNA matches your family (member/donor 62919 shown under "Family 3" on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website) shows that John Davidson as being born about 1728 (versus 1721). Bill, Thank you for calling the typo to my attention. My John Davidson was born 1728 -- not 1721. Yes, this is the John Davidson who "may" have been marred to Tabitha Porter. I am still looking for a document to confirm this marriage. It is accepted family tradition. One of John's sons was, also, John Davidson. Son John was born 1761 -- as was his sister. She was Elizabeth Davidson Leeper -- married to John Leeper. John Leeper was the son of Nicholas Leeper. For several years I have been corresponding with member/donor 62919 shown under "Family 3" in the DNA project. I even went to the cemetery in Mt. Zion, IL where this Davidson's direct ancestor is buried. He was the brother of my John Davidson -- born 1761. Therefore, he was the son of John Davidson -- born 1728. One can find TREMENDOUS amounts of information in this town about the Davidson family from Mt. Zion, IL. Records can be found in the old Presbyterian Church and in other town records. A side note of interest: William and Samuel Davidson (brothers of my John Davidson) left South Carolina many years after the Revolution. They settled in Mt. Zion, IL. They established the first Presbyterian Church in the area. In that church, they had a huge sold metal cross put at the alter. The church records say the Davidson family brought it with them from South Carolina. The original church burned down -- but the people were able to save the cross. It is in the new church today. I was able to touch it and take pictures of it. The church secretary told me when they moved it to the new church that it was extremely heavy and hard to move. Imagine bringing it from S. C. to Illinois? Thanks, again, for bringing the birth date of my John Davidson to my attention -- so I could correct it. As for the date of 1728 -- my resource for that is from the book, Leaves of the Tree. Anna Gayle

    3. Anna, Please see my other/earlier e-mail to this mailing list that explains the family of Hugh Leeper and John Leeper, as well as the Leeper family "connection" to the two UNRELATED (based on DNA) Davidson families. The George Davidson in Lincoln Co., KY and your family were NOT related, based on available DNA testing results, but the Leepers whom they married WERE related to one another (if we can believe some of the various "Leeper family trees" on RootsWeb World Connect). Was your John Davidson who was born in 1721 the same John Davidson who was married to Tabitha (maybe Tabitha Porter)? If so, a person whose DNA matches your family (member/donor 62919 shown under "Family 3" on the Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA website) shows that John Davidson as being born about 1728 (versus 1721). Maybe that is simply because the exact year of his birth cannot be proven(?) Note: The George Davidson in Lincoln Co., KY was part of the overall Davidson family that is shown on the DNA website as "Family 1." Best regards, Bill Davidson

    2. I have never connected myself to the KY Davidson family, but in the recent posts the Leeper name caught my attention. Do you know anything about Hugh Leeper who married Mattie Davidson? I have an Elizabeth Davidson, born 1761, who married a John Leeper. John Leeper was the son of Nicholas Leeper and Mary (last name unknown). Elizabeth and John Leeper are buried in Smith Cemetery -- north of Belmont, North Carolina. A relative (who died many years ago) had old family papers that showed a George Davidson had his signature on some land grants given to one of my early John Davidson(s). This was before I became interested in Davidson research and have no other information about the land or the people. Nor am I sure which John Davidson had business dealing with George Davidson. Over thirty years ago, I was told George was a "cousin." However, the name George Davidson was not carried down in my family line. My resource for this information is no longer available to anyone. All the papers were burned. Sad!! My oldest John was born in 1721. Elizabeth Davidson Leeper was his daughter. Her brother (my direct line) was John Davidson born 1761. Even though Elizabeth and John had the same birth year, I don't believe they were twins. I have never brought this up before today -- because I have no information at all to substantiate a relationship between George Davidson of KY and my John Davidson (Pennsylvania to South Carolina -- and after the children were older they moved to different states -- some to Illinois and North Carolina. My John Davidson moved to Georgia.) Anna Gayle

    2. Bill Davidson
    3. Kathy, this is just another point for clarification on the Davidson and Leeper "connections.". There was also an Elizabeth Davidson who married a John Leeper. Based on DNA results, however, this Elizabeth Davidson was from an unrelated Davidson family versus the Martha Davidson who married Hugh Leeper (though both Davidson families had "ties" to Pennsylvania). The Davidson/Davison/Davisson DNA results website page http://www.tqsi.com/davidsongenes/results.php shows the overall Davidson family that included the above Martha Davidson (a daughter of the George Davidson who married Mary Woods) as "Family 1," and it shows the overall family that included the above Elizabeth Davidson as part of "Family 3." This Elizabeth Davidson was apparently the daughter of a John Davidson (born about 1728 in PA) and his wife Tabitha (possibly Tabitha Porter, as I understand it). I have done very little independent research on the Leeper family, but based on some "family trees" on RootsWeb World Connect, it appears that James Leeper and Margaret (POSSIBLY Margaret Thompson) had several children, including Nicholas Leeper (who married Mary Unknown) and Andrew Leeper (who married Jean/Jane Thompson, daughter of Hugh Thompson). Nicholas Leeper and his wife Mary Unknown had the John Leeper who married Elizabeth Davidson, and Andrew Leeper and his wife Jean/Jane Thompson had the Hugh Leeper who married the unrelated (per DNA) Martha Davidson. The above Hugh Thompson (died about 1757 in Augusta Co., VA; he was married to an Eleanor Unknown) was the apparent brother of the William Thompson (died about 1781) of the Beverly Manor area of Augusta Co., VA. A grandson of William Thompson named David Thompson married Sarah Paxton, and I note that a William Paxton was a witness on the 1825/1826 will of George Davidson in Lincoln Co., KY. This George Davidson/William Paxton "connection" is probably just indicative of the "Augusta Co., VA background" of both families. Bill Davidson

    3. Kathy, per John Lisle's excellent Davidson website, this George Davidson in Lincoln Co., KY was the son of Samuel Davidson and Margaret Unknown. Samuel Davidson was the apparent brother of both "Importation" John Davidson and George Davidson (father of Rev. War hero, General William Lee Davidson). The father of these three brothers has not been proven, but John Lisle believes that he was probably an earlier George Davidson (versus a William Davidson, as some other researchers have stated in the past). As I read the website, the above George Davidson in KY (Lt. George Davidson, Sr.) was married to Mary Woods, and they had several children, including Nancy (who married James Robertson), Susannah (who married John King) and Martha ("Mattie") who married Hugh Leeper. Polly, James, Michael, Samuel, William and John mentioned on the will were also the children of this George Davidson and Mary Woods. Another child of George and Mary (Woods) Davidson, who was also named George Davidson, is shown on the website as having died when he was young. 3. One of my family connections, John DOIG , born in Glasgow in 1882 sailed for Canada in 1903. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWI. On his army paysheet, it notes that he arranged to have $20 sent to his cousin Donald Davidson of 87 McKenzie Crescent, Toronto every month starting in April 1918. John Doig appeared on the Canadian census of 1911 living in Toronto but he must have moved to British Columbia at some point as it was there in Victoria that he enlisted in 1915. This cousin Donald Davidson is a complete mystery to us all. No one has been able to find a Davidson connection to our John Doig family. So any suggestions would be much appreciated. Sheila

    3. Jane, If you go to: http://www.tqsi.com/davidsongenes/results.php and look at member kit number 63327 (currently shown under "Family 10"), you can see the DNA results of the person who descends from the Josiah Davidson who joined the militia in Orange Co., NC in 1780 at the age of 14. It strongly appears that Josiah Davidson was the brother of the David Davidson who married Elizabeth King in 1800, as well as the brother of the Rebecca Davidson who married Samuel King, also in 1800. A court document from the 1840s confirms that the children of William and Elizaebeth Davidson of Orange/Guilford Co., NC included Josiah, David and Rebecca (and other children), and a later census in TN documents that Josiah Davidson was born in VA about 1766. If you click on the member number "63327" on the above website, you will be taken to another screen where you can see the "direct line" of the DNA donor. You will note that this line shows an Andrew Davidson at the top, but I now feel certain that this is incorrect (it should show William Davidson....and several researchers are now in full agreement with that). I will forward you two files/charts on this family, one of which was done by the sister of the DNA donor. I will send these directly to your e-mail address in just a minute. Bill Davidson

    1. Re: [DAVIDSON] John Davison
    2. Bill Davidson
    3. Orren, There is still much speculation on the various Davidson/Davison families that are being discussed in this "thread." I certainly have no "concrete proof," but it APPEARS that Holly's John Davidson (who married Rachel Cooper) COULD have been out of one of the OTHER Davidson families that was in Bedford/Campbell Co., VA when your Abner Davidson was still there (the family of Alexander Davidson and his wife Elizabeth (possibly/probably Elizabeth Steele, it appears). I still believe that your Abner came from the family of James Davi(d)son, Sr., who came to Bedford Co., VA from PA, sometime prior to 1779. In addition, some believe that the John Davidson in KY who married Susannah Jackson was possibly out of the David Davidson/Davison who married Elizabeth Cockrane in Bedford Co., VA in 1779 (and David had an apparent brother named James Davison who married a Jane/Jean/Janet Cockrane that same year). Some also believe that this David Davi(d)son was POSSIBLY out of the Daniel Davison/Davisson family from New England/NY/NJ. A person named Diana believes that her family PROBABLY descends from a David and Elizabeth Davison who ended-up in KY, and she has had a living male family member submit his DNA. That DNA result did NOT match the Daniel Davison/Davisson family from New England/NY/NJ (which has several family members who have submitted their DNA), and that DNA result also did NOT match your DNA (nor the DNA from Holly's family). Diana's family's DNA DID match (or nearly match) some others, but the last that I heard, none of the "matching people" can seem to "connect" themselves to one another. The David and Elizabeth Davison to whom Diana believes she is related was in PA in 1785 (when they had a son there named Philemon Davison). Again, I have no "concrete proof," but I would not be too surprised if that David Davison was a different man than the David Davison who was in Bedford Co., VA in 1779. For one thing, a pair of David Davisons were still in Campbell Co., VA on tax lists in the 1800s. For another, the James Davison (the likely brother of David) who married the other Cockrane women died in Campbell Co., VA in the 1800s, not in some other state. I still believe that you are from the James Davison, Senior family that was in Bedford Co., VA, and I would not be surprised if the Davisons who married the Cockrane sisters there were close relatives of your Abner Davidson. IF that should be the case, then your DNA results would prove that this David Davison in Bedford Co., VA in 1779 and the Daniel Davison/Davisson family from New England/NY/NJ were not related. The bottom line is that we have four totally different DNA results from you, Holly's family, Diana's family and the Daniel Davison/Davisson family. Based on what my research tells me, none of that is a surprise, since I always believed that these were PROBABLY four different Davidson/Davison/Davisson families. Genealogy is full of tricks, twists and turns, however, so I always try to keep an open mind. A few more DNA donors would certainly help......what a great tool it has proven to be! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/FNR.2ACEB/3281.1 Message Board Post: Sherri, I don't THINK that this was the same Davidson family, but a man named Goulder (sometimes shown as Golder/Golden) Davidson moved to Grainger Co., TN from Patrick Co., VA by about 1803. His apparent brother named David Davidson was already in Grainger by at least 1802, but I don't know how long David had been there. David had lived in Stokes Co., NC prior to moving to Grainger Co., TN. I have seen the record of your Blair/Blane Davidson/Darkis Cunningham marriage in 1800. I have also seen the Grainger marriages of Abner Davidson to Anney Evans in 1802 and Alexander Davidson to Patsey Smith in 1803. Do you think that these last two Davidsons were related to your Davidsons? A William Davidson married a Hanna Oaks in Grainger in 1804, and Nancy Davidson married a Richard Fields there in 1806. I SUSPECT that these two marriages (and almost certainly the last one in 1806, based on the Fields surname) DID involve members of the "Patrick Co., VA Davidsons." It appears that David and Goulder Davidson, as well as their apparent brothers John Davidson, Richard Davidson and William Davidson, Junior, were all sons of a William Davidson, Senior who had come to Pittsylvania/Henry/Patrick Co., VA in the late 1760s from Buckingham Co., VA. If David Davidson and/or his descendants were in Grainger by 1800, then MAYBE he could have been a member of your family, but I simply have no proof of that. David appears to have sold his land in Stokes Co., NC in 1802, but that deed record showed that he was ALREADY living in Grainger at that time (but I don't know how long he had been there). There was also an Edward Davidson, a John Davidson and a Briant/Bryant Davidson in Grainger in the early 1800s, and some believe that they were related to David Davidson. We have DNA results from a William Davidson who was in Orange Co., NC by 1780. My research strongly suggests that he was probably the brother named William Davidson, Junior mentioned above. Do you know of any living male Davidsons from your family who could join the DNA testing project?

    2. Several years ago, I was in contact with many people who are researching my Davidson line. I have lost many of their names and email addresses. I would love to hear from you again. My family was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- on the banks of the Schuylkill River in 1761. Before the American Revolution, they moved to Union District, South Carolina. After the Revolution, some of the grown children moved to different places. Two sons (William and Samuel Davidson) moved to Mt. Zion, IL. Their brother (John Davidson) moved to Georgia. John Davidson settled in Shady Dale, Georgia -- Jasper County. He was married (wife unknown) and had six children. The children were Mary M., Robert, Margaret, Jane, David, and John Davidson, Jr. Information about this family can be found on the Davidson Surname DNA Study Project. My kit number is # 63100. Click it for more names and dates. There is an exact match with my kit and kit # 62919. Additional information about many other Davidsons can be seen if you go to the Davidson/Davison Surname DNA Research web site. My own Davidson group is family # 3 -- and their color code is yellow. Currently, there are five positive DNA matches in our group. Again, the purpose of this note is to hear from people I have emailed in the past about mutual ancestors. If others go to the DNA project and find a potential match -- please contact me. I would like to encourage more people to participate in the Davidson DNA research. My understanding is Davidson researchers are among the most active in the project -- let's keep it going. Congratulations!! Anna Gayle (DAVIDSON)
