    1. [DAVENPORT] Re: A John Davenport as a son of John of Martin
    2. Marcia: You questioned whether there could have been both a Jack Smith Davenport and a John Davenport among the children of John Davenport, Sr., son of Martin of Hanover. Good question, well posed. Point of Fact: Jack Smith was Jack Smith everywhere he appeared in Virginia records, no exceptions. The John Smith label was a DAR cook-up so a descendant of Jack Smith, apparently ignorant of the fact her ancestor was a true Revolutionary hero in his own right, having been mortally wounded at Guilford Courthouse, manipulated his name to John so she could paste the Continental Line service of Corporal John Davenport, son of James of Martin, on to Jack Smith and get into the DAR thereby. All of which occurred. As to there having been a son John as well as a son Jack Smith for John, Sr., there is a record in Louisa County Court Orders, 1774-1782, citing a judgment obtained by Hart & Marshall against John Davenport, Sr., and John Davenport, his security, in 1774 for L48. Previous thereto, William Davenport, Jr., married to the Widow Pulliam, had been John, Sr.'s security. Both William, Jr., and John married heiresses, acquired the resources following marriage to be John, Sr.'s security. Until in-laws put a stop to the squandering of the estates on John, Sr.'s hopeless financial condition, both sons apparently supported their father. There is now evidence that John, Sr., was in Louisa until 1778, when he either died unprobated or moved south to Charlotte with his son William Davenport, Jr. (The "Jr." appellation was operative only in Spotsylvania and Louisa records.) When John Davenport, security to John, Sr., disappeared from Louisa records, a John Davenport, married to Elizabeth Carter, appeared in Spotsyslvania records, and opened a tavern west of Spotsylvania Court House. He apparently had contempt for authority, for he was constantly being indicted by the Grand Jury for selling liquor with a license over a decade or more. In his later years, he gave up the tavern and ran a grist mill. No John Davenport appeared in Charlotte County records until John Davenport, later Jack Smith Davenport, son of Jack Smith, was noted in Charlotte Orphans Court and Land records. So, while we do not have proof, we are tightening the circumstantial evidence. There is utterly nothing yet found to connect John Davenport the Younger, Spotsylvania Tavernkeeper, with Richard Davenport of Caroline, other than the circumstantial naming of his eldest son Richard. Among Richard, Sr., of Caroline's believed male descendants, there was a Richard, Jr., a David, an Absalom, a Gideon, a Reuben, a Francis, and a Joseph in evidence, but no John or suggestion thereof. We are working on a better identification of the Davenport-Smith connection. There are a number of the Rootsweb interested. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
