    1. [DAVENPORT] Re: Davenports--Cancel that Newberry Connection
    2. Melanie of Greenville, NORTH CAROLINA: I goofed. I was looking at Greenville, missed the NC, assumed SC where there were a number of Newberry Davenports from 1800-on. Greenville, North Carolina, is another deal, certainly another Davenport line. By North Carolina locale, you are most likely an Albemarle Davenport, one of the many descendants of Richard and Johanna Davenport, who settled on the north side of Albemarle Sound in the 1680s, then moved across the sound to Tyrrell (and later Washington) County, then spread southwards. The last time I was in your Greenville was in the Spring of 1945 when as a 19-year-old Marine I was in the Officer Candidates Battalion, Camp Lejeune, and had a week end pass (48 hours). A buddy suggested that we hitch hike up to ECTC, Eastern Carolina Teachers College, and meet some girls. We did and we didn't. We thumbed our way up there, but we didn't meet any coeds. Seemingly every jarhead (marine), dogface (soldier), and swabbie (sailor) in the North Carolina Tidewater had the same idea. After recognizing that it was a crowd scene, and getting worse by the minute, we turned around and went back to Camp. But we got to see Eastern North Carolina in the Spring. On our next week end pass, we went to Wilmington, which wasn't a whole lot better, but at least they had more than one picture show. Sorry if I raised your hopes. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
