In 1752 he purchased 70 acres in Spotsylvania Co. and in 1755 he purchased 230 ac. to own the whole 300 acres tract that Henry Pendleton had purchased from Benjamin Woodruff. John Davenport lost this land in 1767 due to a series of financial setbacks but seems to have continued in Spotsylvania Co. until 1770. From 1770 through June of 1778 he is found in the records of Louisa Co. The following are probably his children. Although there is no direct proof of the connection, these Davenports are found in or connected to Spotsylvania Co. in the proper time period and do not fit in any other Davenport family at the time. WILLIAM DAVENPORT, probable son of John Davenport and most likely the eldest, was married to Elizabeth Rawlins Pulliam, widow of James Pulliam who died by May 1764 when she was granted administration of his estate. There were four Pulliam children….Rawlings Pulliam heir at law who sold slaves in 1780 (and so had to have been 21 and born by 1759), Sarah Pulliam, James Pulliam who died young and Joseph Pulliam. If Elizabeth was the mother of all four then it is likely she was born as early as 1740. Surely her second husband William Davenport was born at least prior to 1745. Since there were other William Davenports in Spots. Co. at the same time, it is difficult to determine to which William the individual records refer. However, in 1769 John Davenport and William Davenport Jr. sold slaves to William Davenport. This must be John Davenport and son William (Jr.) selling to John’s brother William Davenport, who was also a resident of Spots. Co. I find this document odd in that both John and William are selling the slaves. Under the rules of primogeniture, personal property was not subject to the same rules as real property and so slaves were not automatically the property of the heir at law. If John owned the slaves then he did not need William to jointly sell. If William owned the slaves and was 21 (and must have been by 1769) then he did not need John to sell them. In Aug. 1775 in Spots. Co. William and Elizabeth Davenport gave an account of the estate of James Pulliam form June 1764 to the present. In 1779 William Davenport purchased land in Charlotte Co., Va. And in Oct. 1780 Rawlings Pulliam as heir at law of James Pulliam sold slaves to William Davenport of Charlotte. William Davenport made his will February 1801 in Charlotte Co. naming wife Elizabeth, son Benjamin, son Presley and brother Richard Davenport and “all my children”. (William Davenport names brother Richard in will which connects him to the Richard in Charlotte Co. The deed with Rawlings Pulliam connects him to his wife as Elizabeth Rawlings Pulliam and as a resident of Spots. Co. to 1775. Richard Davenport connects through records in Charlotte as a brother of Jack Smith Davenport of Charlotte.) The children of William and Elizabeth Davenport would have been born after May 1764 and include. ? Pressley Davenport named in will of his father, married in 1793 to Susanna Glover and according to descendants had children Marshall Booker, John S., Clement Andrew, Edward, William, Joseph, and Elizabeth. ? Elizabeth Davenport married in 1796 to Richard North and was named as the daughter of William Davenport in the marriage record. ? Richard Davenport married in 1800 in Pr. Edward Co. to Jenny Baker. ? John P. Davenport married in1799 in Pr. Edward Co. to Polly or Molly Baker and was involved in the estate sale of William Davenport in 1811 ? James S. Davenport married in 1805 in Pr. Edward Co. to Judith Baker and purchased land there in Jan. 1804. He too was involved in the estate sale of William Davenport in 1811. JOUETT DAVENPORT, probable son of John Davenport, is first in the records in Louisa Co. on the 1768 tithables list with Henry Gambill and Jack Smith Davenport. Males had to be at least 16 to be a tithable and so Jouett was born by 1752. He is placed here as a son of John Davenport because it seems more reasonable that John would farm out two tithable sons to relieve some of his own financial burdens during this time. Jouett is still with Henry Gambill in 1770 but was in court in early 1773 owing a debt. He died by 9 June 1778 apparently with no issue. JACK SMITH DAVENPORT was at least 16 in 1768 when he is on the Louisa Co. tithables with Henry Gambill as so was born by 1752. He is gone from the 1770 list and may have gone with brother Richard to Buckingham Co. that year. (See Richard) He was in Charlotte Co. by 1773 and married Lucy Barksdale, the orphan of Collier Barksdale. He was killed by May 1781 at the battle of Guilford having left a will done in April 1781 naming wife Lucy and “all my children”. He owned 270 ac. in Charlotte Co. that was taxes as Jack Smith Davenport estate until 1800 when the land was sold by the heirs. In July 1782 in Charlotte Co. the widow Lucy Davenport married Henry Burnley and they migrated to Georgia. The children of Jack Smith and Lucy Barksdale Davenport were: ? daughter married Henry Byrom ? Richard Davenport ? Jack Smith (or John) Davenport ? William Davenport ? daughter married James Byrom RICHARD DAVENPORT was born 14 Jan 1750 (Rev. War Pension). He claims to have resided in Buckingham Co. at age 20 just prior to the move to Charlotte Co. He is in the Charlotte Co. records as early as 1771. JOHN DAVENPORT left a will in Spots. Co. dated 22 Mar 1820 and probated 4 Dec 1820 naming wife Elizabeth, son John and daughters Permelia Davenport and Frances Trull, sons in law Peter Hicks, Thomas Hall (Elizabeth), and Andrew Hicks. Executor was Joseph Pulliam and John Davenport and witnessed by Terel Towles. He may also have been the father of Richard Davenport of Mercer Co. (now Boyle) Ky. who married Elizabeth Tadlock there.
